Prince Harry’s ‘Whitewash’ Attack Sparks ‘Running His Mouth’ Backlash as £10M Costs Fight Erupts

Adding fuel to the fire

Prince Harry’s courtroom defeat was already bruising, but the fight over who pays the bill may be even messier. Prince Harry’s battle with the Daily Mail publisher has taken a costly new turn after Associated Newspapers sought an interim payment of £10 million from the Duke of Sussex and other claimants following their legal defeat in London.

The money demand is now putting Harry’s fiery reaction back under the microscope. Earlier this month, Judge Matthew Nicklin ruled against Harry, Elton John and several other high-profile claimants who had accused Associated Newspapers of unlawful activity, including alleged phone hacking and other intrusive methods. Reuters reported that the judge found the claimants had failed to prove that information published about them was obtained unlawfully, adding that suspicion alone was not enough.

However, Harry did not hide his frustration after the ruling, describing the decision as “a complete and obvious whitewash.” According to RadarOnline, the Duke said he had gone to court seeking “justice and accountability” but “received neither.” The outlet also noted that Harry alleged 14 articles published by Associated Newspapers titles relied on information obtained through unlawful means, allegations the publisher has consistently denied.

Now, that “whitewash” line is becoming part of the controversy. At Wednesday’s hearing, Associated Newspapers lawyer Antony White argued that Harry and the other claimants should pay costs on an indemnity basis. That would mean the losing side could be required to cover the publisher’s charges without Associated having to show that the costs were proportionate.

White also accused the claimants of making wide-ranging and serious allegations without supporting evidence, saying the case had been designed to create what he called “a banquet of litigation” against Associated.

That is where the story becomes more than another royal legal update. Harry has spent years framing his legal fights as a battle for accountability against the British tabloid press. To his supporters, the Duke is one of the few public figures still willing to take on media companies he believes crossed the line.

But to his critics, the £10 million demand makes the whole debacle look like a very expensive gamble — especially after he publicly blasted the ruling as a “whitewash.”

Many of the online reactions focused less on the court ruling itself and more on Harry’s decision to publicly describe it as a “whitewash.” One Reddit commenter accused the Duke of “running his mouth” about the outcome, adding that his remarks looked “even more damaging” in light of the latest costs dispute.

Others focused on the timing. With the court now weighing who should pay and how much, critics questioned whether accusing the process of being a whitewash was a smart move while the financial fallout was still unfolding. Another Reddit user put it bluntly: “Why would you insult someone/accuse them of malfeasance when they are the one who will be deciding how much money you are going to have to pay?”

The claimants’ lawyers are pushing back on Associated’s demand. According to Reuters, they said Associated had reported incurring “a simply extraordinary £34.5 million” in costs, far above its agreed budget. They offered an interim payment of £8 million by August 28 and said the claimants had insurance cover of up to £16 million.

They accepted that costs should follow after the claims were dismissed, but argued against the “further penalty” of indemnity costs.

That split is now driving the debate. Was Harry right to call out a ruling he believed was unfair, or did his “whitewash” attack only add more heat to a legal fight that was already going badly?

For now, Associated Newspapers has the court win, Harry has the outrage, and the costs battle has given critics a fresh reason to argue that the Duke’s war with the press may be becoming more damaging by the day.
