The Glee cast has spent over a decade turning tragedy into something they could live with. Kevin McHale just made clear the internet isn’t allowed to turn it into content instead. He took to social media and ripped Texas fans and folks everywhere for their hot takes on the show being cursed.
Kevin McHale, who played Artie Abrams on “Glee,” posted a furious message on X, condemning fans who describe the deaths of his former castmates as evidence the show is “cursed.” He wrote:
Let me log off today because the way too many of you talk about real people who have passed as a ‘sacrifice’ or a ‘curse’ in regards to a tv show is [expletive] diabolical and untethered from any sort of humanity or reality. get [expletive].
“Glee” aired from 2009 to 2015, and in the years since, three of its cast members have died. Cory Monteith in 2013, Mark Salling in 2018, and Naya Rivera in 2020. Online “curse” narratives gained fresh traction after the 2023 docuseries “The Price of Glee,” and resurfaced this week alongside news that co-creator Ryan Murphy is considering a reboot.
Texas Fans React to His Anger
Reaction to the report on TMZ is split roughly three ways. One user, @fredd2910, pushed back on McHale himself: “Slamming fans is always a no-no. They made you. That nice house you have. they got you that.”
Another, @CHICAGO566, sided with him: “It’s understandable why people talk about the tragedies surrounding Glee, but reducing the cast and crew to a ‘curse’ can overshadow the real lives and circumstances of those involved.”
A third, @manjesh_jangir, seemed unmoved either way: “Oh wow, cursed? That’s intense!“
McHale and castmate Jenna Ushkowitz are gearing up for a new season of their “Glee” rewatch podcast covering the episodes around Monteith’s death. A season McHale has said they’re approaching “very considerately.”
