Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida has denied claims by primary rival and gubernatorial candidate James Fishback that he is under federal investigation for sex trafficking. According to a post sharing the response, Donalds’ communications director, Gates McGavick, called the accusation “completely false” and a “baseless and defamatory sideshow.” The exchange, tied to the upcoming Republican primary, has drawn online discussion and varied reactions.

Rep. Byron Donalds strongly denied the accusation:

“Completely false. We will not be distracted by this baseless and defamatory sideshow, and neither should you,” Gates McGavick, Donalds’ communications director, said in a statement. https://t.co/4uqP4u525Y pic.twitter.com/sd5UQaeTrS

The video shows Fishback speaking at a podium during a press conference. In the clip, he states that “this government whistleblower, who approached my campaign, has confirmed that this investigation has now expanded to include U.S. Congressman Byron Donalds, who, along with Cory Mills, is under investigation for federal sex trafficking.”

He references dates in May and November 2024 at the MGM National Harbor and describes alleged acts involving the two men. The footage does not show what occurred before or after the statement, and the claims have not been independently confirmed.

According to the post, Donald’s communications director, Gates McGavick, responded in a statement: “Completely false. We will not be distracted by this baseless and defamatory sideshow, and neither should you.” The video focuses on Fishback’s remarks and does not include the denial itself.

Viewer Responses to the Florida Gubernatorial Exchange

Several commenters expressed skepticism or sarcasm toward the denial itself, with remarks such as “When Byron Donalds says it’s completely False, You Know It’s 100% True!” “Yeah, sure-,” and “Well then that settles it as he strongly denies it.”

Others focused on broader criticism or related issues, including “Byron Donald’s is trash,” “But ask Donalds about the charter school millions?” and one noting “Of course Florida has the longest primary.”

Some appeared to call for evidence, with one writing “Just dropped receipts!”
