A Utah woman recently sparked backlash after she posted a video on TikTok sharing how she had met her husband at a school dance a few years ago. She presented it as a sweet love story, but many people in her comments are having a hard time getting past one little detail: he was on a date with her best friend at the time.
Following a get-ready-with-me content style, the woman, who goes by @olivianorton on TikTok, explained that she first met her now-husband, Jackson, in January 2023. According to Olivia, he had gone to the school dance with her best friend, Morgan, and she met up with the pair while they were there.
Olivia said that upon their first meeting, she immediately thought Jackson was “so cute.” She spent the rest of the night hanging out with them and, before the dance was even over, she told Morgan that she thought she was going to marry Jackson.
She apparently wasn’t joking either, as she went home that night and made the same declaration to her parents.
Olivia Starts Talking to Her Friend’s Date
From there, Olivia and Jackson began texting “a ton,” and she soon realized her attraction to him went beyond his looks. However, it wasn’t until about a week after they started talking that Olivia went back to Morgan and told her what had been happening.
“I was like, I have a little secret for you,” Olivia recalled saying at the time. “I cleared everything up with her, made sure she was okay if I liked him… Made sure that she did not like him at all so that I could move forward with him.”
She said Morgan was not only okay with it but was “genuinely so excited” and wanted the relationship to happen.
The friendship apparently survived the unusual start to the romance just fine. Olivia said Morgan has remained one of their biggest supporters over the years, attended their wedding and even gave a speech at the ceremony.
Netizens Question the Friendship
A lot of netizens responding to the video have said they are not convinced that there was nothing strange about the situation. Several were hung up on the fact that Olivia had already started talking to Jackson before asking Morgan how she felt about it.
“You had already started talking to him before you told her and checked she was ok…. Red flag,” one person said. Another argued, “You didn’t give Morgan & your husband a chance which is weird.”
Others were much harsher about what the story supposedly said about their friendship. “I hope she’s your ex best friend bc wow,” one viewer wrote. Someone else commented, “Stop calling her your friend.. you were/are NOT her friend.” A third remarked, “This is not the cute love story u think it is.” Another added, “With friends like this who needs enemies.”
There were a few people who pushed back on the friendship betrayal narrative, however. “Am I only [sic] one who doesn’t think this is weird?? It’s giving just Utah teenager haha,” one commenter asked. Another netizen thought Morgan’s role in bringing the couple together was something to celebrate, writing, “If I helped my girlie to find her hubby it would be a flex for the rest of my life, so happy for yall.”
Morgan Sets the Record Straight
Olivia later provided a pretty strong defense against the idea that Morgan secretly resented what happened: Morgan herself.
She shared a clip from her wedding showing her best friend giving a speech and jokingly introducing herself as “the girl that introduced Liv and Jackson to each other” since Jackson had been her date when they met. Morgan recalled Olivia asking about him that night and said her response was essentially, “Go for him.”
Morgan went on to describe watching their relationship develop from their first date all the way to their wedding day, calling Olivia one of the strongest and most selfless people she knows and saying she “couldn’t be happier” for the couple.
So, at least according to the one person viewers believed Olivia had wronged, there doesn’t appear to be any bad blood. That hasn’t stopped the original story from continuing to raise eyebrows online, though.
