According to a report from LGBTQ Nation, the candidate’s campaign drew widespread attention after he publicly expressed support for executing LGBTQ+ people and made a series of inflammatory comments during the race. His views were condemned by LGBTQ+ advocacy groups and members of his own party, and he ultimately finished the Republican primary with just 90 votes, well behind his opponent.
The backlash wasn’t limited to political opponents. Connecticut Republicans publicly distanced themselves from the candidate’s remarks and backed a primary challenge in an effort to replace him on the ballot, arguing his comments did not reflect the party’s values. He ultimately lost the Republican primary to Anthony Emilio by a wide margin.
