‘He Hired a Drug Dealer’: Liberal Ohio Piles On Vivek Ramaswamy After Family Bodyguard Admits Fentanyl Trafficking

Bodyguard bust becomes campaign baggage

Vivek Ramaswamy’s former family bodyguard has pleaded guilty to a federal fentanyl and methamphetamine trafficking conspiracy, and the political reaction in one Ohio online community has been brutal.

As reported by Tiffin Ohio, Justin Salsburey, 44, admitted in federal court Thursday that he participated in a conspiracy involving at least 500 grams of methamphetamine and at least 40 grams of fentanyl. His wife, Ruthann Rankin, 39, pleaded guilty last week. Both face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum of life in prison.

Salsburey worked for ARK Protection Group and served on Ramaswamy’s family security detail until his December 30, 2025 arrest. Authorities said roughly 260 packages moved through the mail during the alleged operation, while a search of the couple’s Bellefontaine home uncovered fentanyl-positive pills, methamphetamine, suspected MDMA, steroids and 12 guns.

That was enough to send commenters on the r/Ohio subreddit into attack mode.

One summed up the mood with: “The call is coming from inside the house my friends.”

Another framed the controversy as a question of judgment, arguing that if Ramaswamy did not know what his bodyguard was doing, hiring him still reflected badly on the gubernatorial candidate.

‘Not Sure Which Is Worse’

One commenter laid out two possibilities: “Vivek exercises poor judgment regarding the people he surrounds himself with and didn’t know he was a drug trafficker,” or he knew and did not care.

There is no evidence in the original report that Ramaswamy knew about Salsburey’s criminal activity. His campaign has said the bodyguard passed multiple background checks and drug screenings before the arrest.

But another detail fueled suspicion among commenters. Campaign finance records showed Ramaswamy’s campaign continued paying ARK Protection after Salsburey’s arrest, totaling $14,000, with the final $2,000 payment clearing four days after the campaign publicly said it was cutting ties with the company.

For critics in the thread, the story was particularly combustible because fentanyl has become a major political issue in Ohio. One Cincinnati commenter said a candidate who displayed such “poor character evaluation” should be nowhere near the governor’s office.

Others were less convinced the episode would change the election.

“Somehow this will help his chances among Republicans,” one commenter predicted, while others worried that party loyalty would outweigh the controversy.

That remains speculation from a heavily political Reddit thread, not evidence of statewide voter sentiment. What is clear is that a criminal case involving a man entrusted with protecting Ramaswamy’s family has handed his critics an unusually direct question about judgment, vetting and accountability, with the November election approaching.
