Virginia Divided as Gov. Spanberger Has Higher Approval Ratings Than Trump: ‘Republican Here – I Like Her’

A new report shows that Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger has a higher approval rating in the state than U.S. President Donald Trump. The news divided Virginia residents, as some believed that the governor was faring well, while others criticized her. Most still believed Trump had a lackluster performance, however.

As reported by WCYB, a poll released by Morning Consult said that Spanberger currently has a 54% approval rating and 37% disapproval. In the same survey, President Donald Trump appeared with a 38% approval rating and a big 59% disapproval rating in the state.

This new survey suggests that Spanberger’s popularity is on the rise, as Virginia Commonwealth University’s recent poll in July showed a 44% approval rating and 47% disapproval rating.

Virginia Residents React to Recent Survey

The recent poll divided residents who frequent r/Virginia, mostly because their opinions on Spanberger diverged. One user said: “That’s surprisingly high approval for her.” Others were not so impressed by how much Virginians preferred Spanberger to Trump: “She sucks, but he is literally dragging our economy down by his own dumb choices.”

There were even people disagreeing on whether this meant that Spanberger was popular or not: “These low approvals remind me how [George] W [Bush] had like a 30% approval rating by the end of his presidency, after the failed wars, Katrina, economy in shambles, and so on. And my question was always who was even in that 30%? 1/3 of the country is always in a constant braindead state.”

Some folks seemed to believe that the results were fairly accurate, though: “Mid governor is mid. Bad POTUS is bad. Math checks out.”

However, there were plenty of people who liked Spanberger and, surprisingly, they even included Republicans: “Not-MAGA republican here – I like her. A bit too liberal in her policies, but I like the way she communicates; I like her advocacy for Virginians and think, despite being left of the former Governor, that I trust where we are headed more so than Youngkin.”

Someone else agreed: “Agreed. I’d consider myself a liberal as opposed to a leftist, and I like her. The gun bill was absolutely stupid, and I’m happy it was blocked by the courts, and imo that’s the biggest thing that’s soured me on her.”

It remains to be seen whether Spanberger’s popularity will continue to rise or whether further controversies will push her down again. For the moment, it seems, she’ll at least remain more popular than Trump.
