Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have recently detained a drag queen known as Chantal Waldorf in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The operation sparked outrage among Pennsylvania residents, who opposed ICE’s actions.
As reported by Advocate, the “beloved performer” was a Nicaraguan immigrant who lived in Philadelphia. Online, several profiles and influencers called for Chantal to be released, as the message quickly circulated within the local drag queen community.
The reason for the detention was not widely available at the time of this report. However, many Nicaraguans came to the United States under protected status in recent years and became vulnerable to deportation after the Donald Trump administration revoked this status. It’s possible that this could be the performer’s situation.
Pennsylvanians React to ICE Detaining Local Drag Queen
Pennsylvania residents had a strong reaction on Reddit’s r/Pennsylvania, with many condemning the actions of ICE agents and using strong words to call them out, calling both ICE and the police authoritarian.
Someone else also criticized the language used in the country to define people who are not legally in the country: “What does it mean to refer to a person as ‘legal’ or ‘illegal’? It’s lazy language that is also, usefully, dehumanizing. We describe drugs as legal/illegal. Or actions. But we only use this language about humans – particularly ‘illegal’ – in the context of immigration.”
According to this same person: “No immigrant is ‘illegal.’ Some have failed to achieve legal status. No citizen is ‘legal.’ They have simply achieved legal status. For those of us born in this country, that legal status is a happy accident of birth.”
However, due to fighting in the comments, the thread was soon locked down by moderators. One user was able to say this before it happened: “Maga bots swarming as usual. Love to claim it’s about the law of the land but back a man named Trump who has over 32 felony charges, friends with Epstein. (…). Almost as if it’s not the law they care about but the skin color.”
The drag queen’s detention has become the latest flashpoint in Pennsylvania’s ongoing immigration debate, once again highlighting just how deeply the issue continues to divide opinion.
