‘Make America Hurl Again’: Texas Egg Crisis Ignites Political Fury as Locals Blast Republicans’ Lack of Government Oversight

So Much Winning

Nearly 19 million eggs produced in Texas have been recalled over possible salmonella contamination, and some Texans have already decided who they think belongs in the political frying pan.

The massive recall covers 1,589,577 dozen white and brown cage-free eggs from Midwest Poultry Services. The FDA elevated it to its most serious Class I designation on August 12, a category reserved for products carrying a reasonable probability of serious health consequences or death.

At least 98 people across 17 states have been sickened in the outbreak, with 26 hospitalizations reported and no deaths. Texas has recorded the largest number of known cases.

The affected eggs were produced at Texas farms and distributed to retailers including Kroger and Brookshire Grocery, with sell-by or best-by dates running through August 17. Consumers have been told not to eat recalled products and to return them for a refund.

But on the r/Texas discussion, the story quickly became about far more than breakfast.

One commenter delivered a three-word verdict: “Thank a Republican.”

Another blamed the Trump administration directly, writing: “This is purely caused by lack of government oversight and inspections. Trump’s administration is to blame for all this.”

Texans Turn Egg Recall Into Fight Over Trump-Era Oversight

That causal claim has not been established by the FDA’s outbreak investigation. The agency says epidemiological, laboratory and traceback evidence identified the recalled Midwest Poultry Services eggs as a likely source, while the company said the problem emerged through its own environmental monitoring and analysis.

Still, the political anger is landing against a wider debate over federal food-safety capacity.

Food-safety experts have raised concerns about staffing reductions at agencies including the FDA and USDA under the Trump administration, warning that fewer personnel could mean reduced inspection capacity, lost expertise and delays in laboratory and outbreak work. That does not prove those cuts caused this outbreak, but it helps explain why critics are connecting the two.

The Reddit reaction was merciless. Perhaps the most amusing summary was: “Make America Hurl Again.”

“So this is ‘Making America Healthy Again’ huh?” one Texan wrote. Another mocked the promise of smaller government with: “Wow… smaller government and giant companies will self regulate.”

For Trump’s Texas critics, the recalled eggs have become more than just another food-safety alert. They see them as a warning about what happens when government oversight is weakened and businesses are trusted to police themselves.

Whether investigators eventually support any part of that political argument remains unanswered. But almost 19 million recalled eggs have given Texans plenty of reasons to ask who, exactly, is watching the henhouse.
