Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass posted on X encouraging donations to her 2026 reelection campaign, noting that the city matches qualified contributions at a 6-to-1 rate so that a $5 donation becomes $35. According to the post, the funds come through the city’s public matching program. Online users reacted to the message, with many questioning the use of public money to support the campaign.

When you donate to our campaign, the city can match your donation 6 to 1! If you donate $5, the city turns it into $35. Our campaign is powered by YOU!

The video shows Bass speaking outdoors while holding a microphone, intercut with footage from a campaign event. In the clip, she says donations are “more critical right now than ever before,” explains that qualifying contributions from Los Angeles residents are matched “6 to 1” by the city, and notes that after the primary the campaign had “to start over.” She urges viewers to “rush your matching donation” and “chip in $5” or “chip in $25” before thanking supporters.

The accompanying post reiterates the fundraising appeal, stating, “When you donate to our campaign, the city can match your donation 6 to 1! If you donate $5, the city turns it into $35. You power our campaign!” It also includes a link directing supporters to an ActBlue donation page.

The 6-to-1 match refers to Los Angeles’s existing public matching-funds program for qualified city candidates, which applies limited public funds to eligible small donations from city residents.

Commenters Weigh the City’s Role in Campaign Cash

Many users focused on the use of public funds, with one writing, “Why on EARTH are LA City taxpayers, who can’t even afford to clean up their streets or have water in their fire hydrants, forced to match contributions to Bass’ Mayoral reelection campaign 6:1?!? … HUH?! Insanity!”

Another commented, “So you’re admitting to campaign fraud right here on X? Using city funds is illegal!”

A further reply stated, “How can you legally and ethically justify using city money for your personal campaign? This is appalling!!”

Others described the appeal as “ridiculous and should be illegal” or simply noted, “Um, that’s illegal.”

The post has become one more element in the ongoing online discussion of Los Angeles’s public matching-funds program during Mayor Bass’s reelection campaign. As the race continues, viewers remain divided over how the 6-to-1 matching system works and whether public financing should play such a prominent role in local elections.
