Gyms Have Gotten So Ridiculous That People Are Using Barbells as Tripods Now: ‘Just Use It With the Phone Hanging Off the End’

That’s not what barbells are for

In the past, we saw gyms as places where the only thing we did was exercise, but nowadays they have become synonymous with recording routines and dealing with entitled gymgoers who treat them like photo studios instead of what they were made for. Unfortunately, things aren’t improving, as one customer just shared a picture that might be the straw that broke the spotter’s back. Apparently, some gym members are now using gym equipment, mainly barbells, as phone tripods.

Couldn't use barbell because this guy was using it as tripod

The hilarious and equally infuriating image comes from user Negative_1by12_aura on Reddit, who claims they couldn’t use a barbell that day because, as the picture clearly shows, someone else was using it as a tripod. Go figure.

As you can see, the wanna-be influencer found a way to stick their phone on one of the barbell’s ends, then flipped the barbell sideways to create a gym-made tripod. As expected, this ended up angering OP, as one expects to be able to use gym equipment for its intended purpose, and not whatever multifunctional ends this person went for. Although it’s only one picture, this barbell conundrum seems to have struck a nerve with many gymgoers, as this type of behavior seems quite common nowadays.

Many other gym members flooded the post’s comment sections and shared a few hilarious remarks on the tripod matter, while others complained about how customers have become so entitled that they feel as if they have the right to pull stunts like this one.

Gymgoers Furious Over Gym Equipment Misuse

Since situations like this are quite common, even if they don’t involve a MacGyver-like gym tripod, people vented about this, giving some advice to OP regarding what they could do in this situation.

“Just pick up the barbell and use it with the phone hanging off the end. He’ll end up with a much more interesting recording.“

“The amount of people that want to record themselves at the gym is hilarious … work out the biceps AND the ego.“

Still, a few others chimmed in, saying that not all gym members are like this, and even talked about how to properly behave at these establishments.

“Powerlifter here. I film myself to help with technique and other stuff, but I never use gym equipment, and it’s 2 quick videos around max weight. Takes me 45 seconds of filming max.

Unsurprisingly, the video struck a nerve. Many viewers said they’re seeing this kind of behavior more and more at their local gyms, and while they hope the trend eventually fades, they fear some people are simply more concerned with creating content than considering how it affects everyone else.
