Liberal Minnesota Savages Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Over ICE Agent Extradition Delay: ‘Republicans are protecting violent criminals’

Texas tests its law-and-order brand

Minnesota’s extraordinary legal fight with Texas has now spilled into raw public anger, with local commenters accusing Gov. Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans of turning routine extradition into a political protection racket.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison sued Abbott in federal court Tuesday after the Texas governor failed for nearly three months to approve the extradition of ICE agent Christian Castro. As reported by the Star Tribune, Castro is charged in Minnesota with four felony counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and one misdemeanor count of falsely reporting a crime following the January shooting of Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in Minneapolis.

Castro has been jailed in Cameron County since his May 29 arrest by the Texas Rangers. Minnesota officials say Texas law could make him eligible for release on Aug. 26 if the extradition remains unresolved.

Abbott has tied action on Minnesota’s request to an entirely separate political grievance, saying he will not respond until Minnesota leaders accept responsibility for fraud involving federal programs.

The “Law And Order” Argument Is Coming Back To Bite

That explanation has gone down spectacularly badly in one Minnesota Reddit thread. One Dakota County commenter summed up the mood with: “Let justice be done. If he truly did nothing wrong he has nothing to fear. We aren’t a banana republic like Texas.”

The anger quickly moved beyond Abbott himself. Another commenter wrote: “Texas Republicans are protecting violent criminals and helping them escape justice.” A second accused “Texas republican criminals” of “protecting other criminals.”

Others turned Republican rhetoric about policing back on the party. One asked: “Who’s tough on crime vs soft on crime again, according to Republicans?”

The criticism even extended to Republican voters, with one commenter arguing that the problem was “just the ones in office and the people who vote for them.”

Those are accusations from anonymous Reddit users, not findings by a court. But they reveal the political damage Abbott’s standoff is creating among people already deeply suspicious of federal immigration enforcement.

There is also a serious constitutional question beneath the fury. In 1987, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that federal courts can enforce interstate extradition obligations, describing the Extradition Clause’s commands as mandatory rather than optional.

That makes Minnesota’s lawsuit about considerably more than one ICE agent. For furious commenters watching from Minnesota, Abbott’s refusal looks like the worst possible advertisement for a party that has spent years claiming ownership of “law and order.” If a governor can effectively stall an accused officer’s return because of an unrelated political dispute, the question is no longer simply what happens to Castro.

It is whether the rules still apply when politics makes following them inconvenient.
