An anti-Islam protest ended with 22 people arrested in Dearborn, Michigan. The protest in Wayne County led liberal-leaning users to mock the arrested demonstrators online, highlighting how many of them were from outside Michigan and protested during the middle of the week.

As reported by CBS, the protest was organized by the “Christian Crusader March” and led by conservative political activist Jake Lang, as well as Detroit pastor Lorenzo Sewell. Reportedly, the protest had the goal of “Stopping the Islamification of America.” The protest was aimed against the Dearborn City Council, which was gathering nearby.

While the police claimed that most demonstrators were peaceful, some of them “engaged in unlawful conduct and required police intervention,” and were arrested for the misdemeanors of Breach of Peace and Disorderly Conduct. These protesters’ ages ranged from 18 to 64, and many of them came from other states. No injuries were reported at the event.

Michigan Reacts To Arrests of Anti-Islam Protesters

The arrest of the protesters was seen in a bad light in some online communities, such as Reddit’s r/Michigan, where most users either criticized or cracked jokes at the protesters’ expense, calling them “racists” and “losers.”

One Michigan local summarized the overall feeling about the protesters who were arrested: “What a bunch of clowns.” Someone else added: “On a Tuesday? Do these people not have jobs?” referring to how they came to another state in the middle of the week.

Another user highlighted how irritated they were by many of these protesters being from outside Michigan: “I do not understand what is wrong with people who need to go to another community to antagonize its residents. Stay home; you’re not welcome here.” Someone else commented: “Gas is too expensive to be an [expletive] in another town.”

This led others to call these protesters out: “All that talk about outside agitators when it’s the left, but they literally do it and in our faces on the right.”

Another person commented on how the police handled the situation: “Weird how they handled these protesters so calmly and didn’t call in ICE to record all the protesters’ faces, etc.”

The protest has become another flashpoint in an already divisive debate, with reactions showing just how sharply opinion remains split. If similar demonstrations continue in Michigan, they’re likely to keep drawing both strong criticism and vocal support.
