‘Apparently I have been CURED’: Pennsylvania Women With Paraplegia Receives Grim News on the Status of Her Social Security

How is this justifiable?

A Pennsylvania content creator and personal trainer recently shared on her TikTok account what she sarcastically called the “best news.” She says she’ll no longer be receiving Social Security due to her paraplegia. The TikToker does this all while constructing her wheelchair.

TikTok user Nikkiwalsh.adaptfir, Nikki, shares on TikTok she’s relied on disability benefits to help her out financially for years. So it was a surprise to receive mail that it’d be ending. “Apparently I have been cured, according to social security,” she writes in the caption of her video.

Apparently I have been ✨CURED✨ according to Social Security!!! 😭♿️ After almost 8 years, I received a letter saying my disability has “ended.” Spoiler alert…I am, in fact, still paralyzed😂😂 I still use a wheelchair. I still can’t walk. I still need accessible parking, accommodations, adaptive equipment…ya know, all those fun little disabled person things. What they ACTUALLY mean is that I no longer qualify for SSDI benefits because I’ve been working and earning above Social Security’s monthly income limit. For anyone who doesn’t know, SSDI has work incentives that allow you to test your ability to work while still receiving benefits. One of those is a 9-month Trial Work Period. After that, there are additional rules around how much you can earn and continue receiving SSDI benefits. So no, my spinal cord did not spontaneously regenerate🤣😂 My disability didn’t “end.” I wish it were that easy🫠 I built a career that eventually allowed me to earn too much to continue receiving my monthly SSDI benefit…and THAT is something I’m incredibly freaking proud of. 🥹 I’m obviously being very sarcastic in this video because the wording of the letter absolutely SENT ME. Like congratulations everyone!!! I have been healed!!! 😂🙌🏼 But underneath the joke, this is actually a pretty huge milestone for me😍 From wondering what my life, independence, and career would look like after becoming paralyzed…to building multiple businesses, working for myself, and reaching a point where I no longer qualify for SSDI because of my income! THAT part feels pretty damn good🫶🏼♿️ And just a reminder y’all, your disability status and your ability to earn an income are two completely different things!! #WheelchairUser #SpinalCordInjury #SocialSecurityBenefits #DisabilityAwareness #AdaptiveTrainer

As Nikki states the obvious nature of her paraplegia, whilst constructing her wheelchair, she states she’s exceeded her monthly income limit according to Pennsylvania Social Security. This came after she says she went over the minimum monthly income of $1,450. “Spoiler alert: I am, in fact, still paralyzed. I still use a wheelchair. I still can’t walk.”

She explains that she’s been going through a 9-month trial work period with SSDI. Since she’s succeeding as a personal trainer, she was deemed to no longer need the benefits. However, Nikki has admitted that, joking aside, she’s still “proud,” given that she built a successful life despite her disability. “That part feels pretty damn good,” she wrote in the caption of her TikTok video.

Online outrage ensues, commenters blame Republicans and President Trump

Although Nikki shared that she was ultimately okay with the slashing of her benefits, people in the comments weren’t happy either way and argued she should still receive help. “I’m so sorry. I hope you can get a good attorney and fight this,” one commenter wrote.

Some struggled to understand how anyone, disabled or not, could live off of an income below the minimum threshold. “And who the [expletive] can survive on $1500 anyways.”

Others put the blame squarely on President Trump and Republicans; after all, funding for programs like Medicaid have been slashed. “Consequences of voting with MAGA are real,” a viewer argued. “All while our President is making billions,” another wrote.

Exceeding the minimum income threshold or not, it’s clear Nikki’s benefits being slashed didn’t sit well with her audience. It’s great that she doesn’t necessarily need it, but it should be available regardless, if only to help a little.
