Democratic Socialist Angie Nixon recently secured the nomination for the U.S. Senate in Florida, sparking an angry reaction online. Nixon, who recently joined the Democratic Socialists of America, has been heavily criticized for her left-wing views.
As reported by Jezebel, Nixon’s victory was somewhat surprising to Florida voters. Her opponent, Democrat Alex Vindman, outraised her 16-to-1 and was the clear favorite in the Democratic primary. However, Nixon beat him by over 12%. Notably, she’s also the first Black woman to secure a nomination for this position in the party.
What really surprised people online, however, was that the left-wing, more radical candidate won the primary in Florida. This caused widespread backlash against her, led by right-wing profiles such as EndWokeness on X.
Nixon supports broadly left-wing policies, such as a much larger social safety net, stronger worker protections, progressive taxation, stronger gun control, and legal abortion, among other issues. To actually become a U.S. senator, Nixon still has to beat incumbent Sen. Ashley Moody in November.
Internet Reacts to Angie Nixon’s Nomination
Nixon’s nomination led to a big backlash on X. One user had harsh words for her: “They are destroying the American Dream and spitting in the face of our Constitution. Another communist funded critter bellowing nothing that matters to people who actually work every day.”
Another person said: “She is a deranged lunatic! Wake up Florida before she ruins your state!” Some even blamed the current MAGA movement for her being picked: “Think about it: Trump messed things up so badly that people are willing to turn to socialism in a desperate attempt to find a working government.”
Generally, centrists and right-wing voters seemed to be more concerned: “Calling on all sane democrats to vote Republican! The DSA must be driven from the party.”
Other seemingly Republican voters did not seem too concerned, however. One of them said: “Not a problem; Moody will take care of the issue, and Nixon will be gone. Florida is not going to vote for a communist for the Senate.”
While Nixon’s victory was surprising and contentious, it remains to be seen whether she will gain enough traction to beat Moody and reclaim the Senate seat for the Democratic Party.
