A Minnesota mother’s TikTok video is causing debate online, after she made a video of toy dolls for sale, with strangely exaggerated proportions. Given how the darker skinned babies look, she argues it’s a racist depiction.
TikTok user B.aarabi, Brooke, shared her fury online. She had stopped by Target, looking for a “colored” baby doll for her young daughter. She discovered the black baby dolls have angrier facial expressions than the white ones. On top of that, they have runny noses, drool, and generally don’t look fun to play with. But the white baby dolls? She said they appear “smooth and unbothered!”
Brooke shows one of the white baby dolls and says, “Oooh, porcelain skin, so cute.” Some did include snotty noses, but you wouldn’t notice it at a quick glance. Then she shows one of the black baby dolls next to it, and it looks grumpy and wrinkly. She shows off another, which has noticeably darker liquid coming out of its nose and mouth. She can’t figure out why the manufacturers wouldn’t just make them all look “cute.”
Either way, seeing this set something off in Brooke and she decided against buying any of them for her daughter, who you can hear in the background. She tells her audience, “I wanted to get my baby girl a colored baby doll but they all MAD?” Because of this, she asks her audience, “Does anyone know where I can get a brown curly-haired baby doll for my toddler?”
Many agree with Brooke, while a few argue it’s an overreaction
After claiming her assertion that the darker skinned babies were generally uglier, Brooke’s comment section ignited with support. That didn’t stop some viewers from playing devil’s advocate or outright argued against her.
“Looking around Target to find something to be mad at,” one commenter challenged. When pressed on it further, the viewer resorted to using unserious memes.
One TikTok user even suggested taking the matter straight to the source: the manufacturers. “It’s not Target. Contact the manufacturer of the dolls. Smh.”
Others wondered as to why the dolls had snotty, runny features to begin with. “And who wants their baby doll to have fake drool and snot?!? Why would that be necessary.”
On her TikTok video, Brooke tagged Target and the manufacturer’s official TikTok accounts. “I NEED ANSWERS!!!!” she demanded. And given the response in her comment section, it seems many want the same.
