Her excitement did not land

A Minnesota teacher is facing intense backlash online after a video of her celebrating the relaunch of Somali Airlines began circulating. The clip, posted on Instagram by a woman identifying herself online as Sarah Somali and presented in the post as a Minnesota schoolteacher, shows her encouraging followers to book flights and support Somali-owned businesses.

This message quickly drew both enthusiasm and outrage once it reached a wider audience on X.

This is ‘Sarah Somali,’ she is a school teacher in Minnesota

“Somali Airlines is back after 35 years — I'm so excited to support this venture because I wanna travel to Somalia. I wanna be able to support everything Somali-owned — we gotta make sure we're doing our part… pic.twitter.com/0QyTFF2me8

The excitement is tied to real news. Somali Airlines, the country’s flag carrier, is set to resume commercial passenger service in September 2026 after a 35-year hiatus dating back to the collapse of the government in 1991, according to Somalia’s Civil Aviation Authority. The relaunch will begin out of Mogadishu with routes planned across the country’s major cities.

In her video, the woman calls the news “breaking” and says she is eager to fly the airline herself. “Obviously, I’m so excited to support this venture because I want to travel to Somalia,” she says, adding that she wants “to be able to support everything Somali-owned.”

She frames the relaunch as something worth showing up for: “We got to make sure we are doing our part supporting it, making sure we are booking those flights.” She closes the video by urging viewers to follow the airline and says she plans to visit Somalia soon so she can “be riding on Somali Airlines.”

Internet Reacts to Minnesota Teacher’s Somali Airlines Video

Once the clip reached X via @WallStreetApes, the reaction turned hostile. One commenter wrote, “Let’s get her a ticket, put her up in a finest hotel in Mogadishu she can send us videos from the market.” Others took a harsher tone, with one writing, “One way flights loaded sending them home and out of our country! And the white liberals with them since they love them so much!”

Another went further, calling the situation “cultural suicide” and writing, “Somali teachers in Minnesota openly prioritizing their homeland over America is cultural suicide. Fire them, deport them, and hire Americans who actually love this country.” A separate commenter questioned her framing of Somalia, writing, “So she wants to go on trips from a place she had to flee from because it was too dangerous to live there?”

One more reply opted for a sarcastic tone, “Teacher, she should really go and teach there, the impact she would be would benefit all.”

The backlash reflects a broader tension that has played out repeatedly in Minnesota this year, where the state’s large Somali community has been a recurring flashpoint in online and political discourse, from immigration debates to fraud allegations involving Somali-owned businesses.

Against that backdrop, a video celebrating Somali cultural and economic ties struck a nerve well beyond the original post.
