Connecticut Rages at Republican Leadership as 63,000 Lose SNAP Benefits: ‘Are We Great Again Yet?’

Connecticut’s safety net Snaps hard

Nearly 63,000 people in Connecticut have lost SNAP benefits, twice the number state officials originally expected, and the reaction from residents has been a combustible mix of anger, disbelief and one painfully simple question: “Are we great again yet?”

The cuts followed changes introduced under President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” including expanded work requirements. According to a Connecticut Voices for Children report cited by WFSB, the number of people losing assistance has already surged beyond the Department of Social Services’ expectations.

For Middletown resident Justin Taylor, that means trying to survive without roughly $300 a month in SNAP assistance. Taylor, who recently found housing after experiencing homelessness, told WFSB that mental health issues, a history of substance abuse and a lack of transportation made meeting the new requirement of 20 hours of work or volunteering each week impossible.

“It’s been really rough,” Taylor said.

His experience has become a flashpoint online, where Connecticut residents are arguing over what the cuts say about both the economy and the government running it.

Connecticut Residents Say the System Is Breaking in Both Directions

Over on the Connecticut subreddit, one commenter pointed to rising living costs and inflation while condemning the decision to take food assistance away from struggling residents. Another mocked Trump’s promises to lower grocery prices, asking: “Donald said he would make grocery prices cheaper immediately… when is that happening.”

The anger is not only about Trump or Republicans. The discussion also exposed something more complicated: a widespread belief that America’s safety net simply does not work properly.

One commenter summed it up bluntly: “The system is flawed.”

That criticism came from someone who said they knew both people earning too much to qualify despite struggling, and someone they believed was exploiting eligibility rules. Others pushed back against portraying SNAP recipients as lazy, arguing that mental illness, disability, childcare, transportation problems and homelessness can make apparently simple work requirements much harder to satisfy.

Meanwhile, Connecticut is attempting to soften the blow. Gov. Ned Lamont has directed hundreds of millions of dollars toward food banks and SNAP recipients, according to WFSB.

But local charities are already feeling the pressure. Amazing Grace Food Pantry in Middletown is reportedly seeing 15 to 20 new people each month, many of them single adults and seniors.

The Reddit thread eventually became part political argument, part emergency cookbook, with residents sharing cheap meal ideas, food pantry information and offers to donate.

That may be the most damning part. While politicians argue over eligibility and spending, ordinary Connecticut residents are swapping pasta budgets and soup kitchen addresses because thousands of their neighbors suddenly need help eating.
