Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro posted to the social media platform X to criticize President Donald Trump for allegedly escalating a trade dispute with Canada. He argues that the tariffs are creating unnecessary economic uncertainty for businesses, farmers, and families.

Commenters responding to Shapiro were divided, with many accusing the Democratic governor of defending Canada rather than American businesses. Others agreed with Shapiro and argued that Trump’s approach is damaging an important economic relationship.

Since Day One, Donald Trump has chosen chaos and cruelty — and by doubling down on his reckless trade war with Canada, he’s further harming our families, farmers, and small business owners.

The comments come after trade negotiations between the United States and Canada collapsed, resulting in the former imposing a 50% tariff on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Since then, Trump has allegedly threatened additional tariffs on Canadian-made vehicles, auto parts, and more.

In response to these tariffs, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney imposed their own retaliatory tariffs. As this goes on, the significance of the dispute increases as both sides of the border depend heavily on integrated supply chains.

In the X post above, Shapiro comments on how this affects Pennsylvanians, writing, “He’s not only hurting Pennsylvanians — who are already struggling to afford basic necessities like groceries and gas because of his war of choice in Iran — he’s destroying the relationship with one of our country’s strongest allies.“

He also goes over a visit he had with Prime Minister Carney early in 2026, where he told POLITICO in an interview, “I really wanted to just make clear that we respect Canadian sovereignty and also do business. I mean, Canada is a huge trading partner for Pennsylvania. We export and import literally about $14 billion a year on both sides. We have a totally balanced trade relationship.”

Comments and Reactions to Josh Shapiro’s Canada Tariff Criticism

Commenters criticizing Shapiro were particularly frustrated by what they viewed as the governor taking Canada’s side in the dispute. One commenter wrote, “Grow a pair. You should be supporting America instead of [expletive] for Canada.“

Similarly, another commenter wrote, “What about the 200-300% tariffs on PA farmers goods in Canada? Or are you saying that doesn’t affect our farmers? Canada has been taken advantage of us for years. It’s time to level the playing field.“

Not everyone agreed, however, with one commenter accusing Trump of alienating American allies and another sharing the story of a Buffalo small business, writing, “My name is Dan. I run a small auto parts shop just outside Buffalo. Sixty percent of my suppliers are in Ontario. Forty percent of my customers are in Ontario. The new tariff war with Canada is goi…” — Anonymous, Buffalo, NY“

As the trade dispute continues to escalate and both countries threaten additional tariffs, Shapiro’s criticism is giving people yet another place to argue over who is actually responsible for the economic consequences.
