Reddit user Nathan0066 shared a concerning story on r/whatdoIdo about a large dog they see sitting on their neighbor’s apartment porch for extended periods. Nathan claims that whether it’s “10 am, 1 pm, 5 pm, 8 pm, or 10 pm, the dog is always outside.”
From what they can gather, Nathan says their neighbor’s dog has no toys or bed out on that porch, which reeks of poo. The dog does have food and water, and occasionally gets taken out on walks, according to Nathan’s partner. However, the main concern is that the dog is essentially trapped on that porch all day, without a dog door or being let back in. “He doesn’t look skinny or malnourished but this is no way to treat a dog,” they protested.
“I get people working throughout the day, but if you’re gonna stick your dog outside all day, you don’t deserve to have one,” Nathan continued, accusing the neighbors of neglecting their pet. OP says they have their own pitty mix at home, which is why they have a soft spot for “breeds that often get mistreated or misrepresented.” Though their intentions are pure, plenty of people are skeptical about whether this dog actually needs their help.

First, a few people pointed out how Nathan shouldn’t be giving toys to strangers’ dogs, which they said they did earlier. “I applaud the spirit behind it, but be careful about giving dogs toys when you couldn’t possibly know their chewing habits,” cautioned a commenter. “As long as the dog has food and water access and cover from direct sunlight then it’s totally and completely normal and legal,” added another.
Of course, several people did side with Nathan and suggest they confront the owner or the property’s management. “Report to apartment complex. No way this is allowed,” demanded one user. The latter is the approach OP said they would take in an update: inform the apartment complex about the dog on the porch.
OP has yet to update on whether anything will be done as of writing. That said, there have been plenty of worse cases of pet neglect or abuse online, like someone allegedly locking their puppy in a small cage outdoors. Still, this dog’s porch situation, though not ideal, could be better, as Nathan and several commenters put it.
