‘Why Vote for a Party With No Policy Agenda?’: New York House Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ Capitol Dodge Ignites Backlash

Wait, that’s the plan?

House Leader Hakeem Jeffries was asked in Washington what bills Democrats would prioritize if he became speaker. He said the party is “focused on winning the election.” Viewers are split over whether that is a strategy or a dodge.

A clip circulating on X shows New York House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries answering a reporter at a U.S. Capitol press conference on Aug. 31, 2026. According to the post, the reporter asked about Democrats’ agenda and any specific legislation, and Jeffries replied, “We’re focused on winning the election.” Online users reacted after the exchange, with many arguing the answer showed the party putting politics ahead of a policy plan.

In the footage, a reporter asks Jeffries what Democrats would do if they win and he becomes speaker next year, “specifically beyond accountability, beyond affordability,” including “any specific legislation or any particular investigation that you will prioritize.”

Jeffries answers, “We’re focused on winning the election and making the case to the American people” in the days remaining before November. He says that “to move this country in a different direction,” focus on “the issues that matter,” and “begin to end this national nightmare,” Democrats have to “fire the Republicans who are currently in charge of the House and in the Senate.”

The video does not show the rest of the briefing. The same day’s press conference covered other topics, and a reporter on the scene separately noted Jeffries mentioning priorities such as reversing Medicaid cuts, extending Affordable Care Act credits, restoring congressional tariff authority, and ending the war in Iran.

How Viewers Are Responding to the Capitol Exchange

Some users said the answer showed Democrats putting politics first. “All they care about is winning. Nothing else,” one commenter wrote. Another asked, “Why would I … vote for a party that has no policy agenda?!”

Others argued the party’s message was still built around opposition to President Donald Trump. One user wrote, “Democrats’ agenda… goes against Donald Trump, and to hell with everything else!” A second said they were “still running on ‘Donald Trump bad’ only.”

A third group focused on the lack of a written plan. An independent commenter said, “The Dems have no plan,” and added that “Trump Bad — We Are Good” is “a statement, not a plan.”

Another viewer put it more bluntly: “Democrats have nothing to offer.”

The clip is now part of a wider midterm debate over whether Democrats are offering a governing plan or focusing first on winning back the House. Online discussion remains centered on Jeffries’ “winning the election” reply and what, if anything, follows it.
