A New York mom says Starbucks employees refused to serve her after her autistic son started crying while waiting for a cake pop, even threatening to call 911 if she and her child did not leave the store. The video shared on TikTok by @ImaanUp shows employees behind the Starbucks counter as the mother records the exchange. She repeatedly asks why her order is being withheld because her son is crying.
“You have some policy when this, right, that I cannot stay there, because my son crying,” she says. “Show me this policy. Show me right now.”
In the comments, the New York mother explained that she had ordered ahead online specifically because waiting in an overstimulating environment can be difficult for her son. She says she went to the store after receiving a notification that her order was ready, but noticed something was missing. While she waited, her son saw the cake pop they had ordered and began crying.
The mother accused the cashier of refusing to give them their completed order because her son was crying, which caused him to become “hysterical.” She also claims an employee said her son was “annoying the customers.”
She says several customers offered to buy her son a cake pop, but employees then announced, “We are currently having a problem and cannot serve anyone until this lady and her child leave.”
The mother says staff threatened to call 911 if they refused to leave. She told them her son was autistic, hoping they would show him “some patience and basic human decency.”
According to her account, police eventually arrived, and she and her son waited outside. She claims the officer later apologized on behalf of the staff and brought their order outside to them.
The mother says she shared the story to raise awareness, not to seek sympathy or use her son’s autism as an excuse.
“A little patience, kindness, and understanding can make all the difference,” she wrote. “Children and families—especially those with special needs—deserve compassion, not humiliation.”
Internet Reacts to New York Starbucks Confrontation
Reaction online has split along familiar lines. One commenter wrote, “I think humanity lost the plot,” while another added plainly, “To refuse to serve a customer because a child is crying is wild. If that was my business, they would have probably lost their jobs.”
Others pushed back on the framing. A self-identified Starbucks worker noted, “When I work at Starbucks they do mention that we allowed to deny service for disruptive behavior,” and a separate commenter argued the legal bar is high: “Autism is not a visible disability, disruptive behavior is a visible thing. They can deny you service for that behavior.”
One user summed up the gap between law and ethics: “It’s not a legal issue, but a moral one. Unfortunately, discrimination would be too hard to prove because they’re just saying it’s disruptive behavior and citing their right to refuse. However, they’re dead wrong on a moral level.”
Starbucks has not issued a public statement on the incident, and no independent confirmation of the employees’ account has surfaced beyond the New York mother’s video and description of events.
