Rep. Jasmine Crockett is demanding a federal investigation into what she describes as an alarming pattern of Black Americans being found hanging from trees and other structures, warning that authorities cannot afford to dismiss the cases as isolated tragedies. The Texas Democrat has since ignited a fierce backlash online after publicizing her letter to the DOJ.

Crockett, who serves as Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight, sent a letter on Wednesday to Attorney General Todd Blanche and Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon calling on the Department of Justice to investigate whether some deaths classified as suicides could instead point to racial violence or failures in local investigations.

Black Americans are being found hanging in 2026.

For generations, Black people were lynched while institutions stood by and did nothing.

“The images we are seeing of Black bodies hanging from trees and other structures across this country should shock the conscience of every American,” Crockett said. Her demand comes against the backdrop of America’s long history of racial terror and lynching, particularly in the South. Crockett argued that the circumstances surrounding deaths involving Black Americans deserve closer scrutiny when they raise unanswered questions.

“Given our nation’s horrific history of racial terror and lynching, we cannot simply look the other way,” Crockett stated, calling for every case to be investigated thoroughly and considered alongside similar incidents nationwide. The Texas Rep. also raised concerns about potential involvement by law enforcement officers. Her letter cited a report identifying 23 possible modern-day lynching cases involving police or correctional officers.

Last but not least, she also pointed to recent revelations involving alleged racist conduct within the Senatobia Police Department in Mississippi. “America spent generations allowing Black people to be lynched while institutions with the power to intervene stood by and did nothing,” Crockett said. She added, “We cannot repeat that history.”

Crockett’s demand has invited fierce criticism

The Texas congresswoman’s comments quickly ignited a fierce debate online, with supporters arguing that the cases deserve federal scrutiny while critics accused her of inflaming racial tensions. One commenter argued that Crockett was trying to portray every case through the lens of historical Mississippi, accusing her of being a “liar, a race baiter, and an irrelevant political hack” and claiming modern surveillance makes such crimes difficult to conceal.

Another commenter challenged Crockett to demand investigations regardless of the victim’s race, pointing to the 2025 death of a young Hispanic man found hanging from a tree in Aurora, Colorado, which local authorities reportedly described as an apparent suicide. “Demand the same for the young Hispanic man found hanging from a tree,” argues a commenter.

Others outright blamed African Americans for violence and claimed, “Fact is white people NEVER sit around and hate on black people…. It’s in their heads. We’d rather just live in peace.” Another post insulted Crockett, “This post is hate speech meant to provoke deadly violence against Whites by implying they are going around hanging Black people. Anyone who does not see this has sawdust for brains.”

Crockett, however, is calling for investigators to determine what the evidence shows. Her central question is whether these deaths truly represent unrelated tragedies or whether authorities are overlooking a larger pattern.
