Prince Harry and Meghan Markle traded Montecito, California, for Britain less than two weeks ago, and the palace has already put their new status in writing. King Charles III has authorized a formal letter confirming that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain non-working royals, that their HRH styles are not to be used, and that they will operate entirely separately from the Royal Household, Newsweek reported Monday.

"NEVER BE ROYAL!" King Charles REJECTS Prince Harry & Meghan Markle in explosive leaked letter

The Lord Chamberlain, Lord Richard Benyon, the most senior official in the royal household, sent the letter to senior government and military officials, as well as the lord lieutenants who serve as the King’s personal representatives across the country. “To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that this information be shared,” the letter reads, according to the Associated Press.

The wording leaves little room for interpretation. “In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests,” the letter states. It adds that “the charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity,” and confirms that any engagements the couple carries out will be private rather than official.

Harry and Meghan arrived in Britain with their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, on August 26, six years after stepping back from royal duties and relocating to California. Queen Elizabeth II made that split final in February 2021. Palace officials say the new guidance is fully in accordance with the Sussexes’ own stated wishes, and Buckingham Palace did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. The couple has not publicly commented.

Palace Move Fuels Fears of a ‘Parallel Royal Court’

The decision to circulate the letter so widely and release it publicly is what has royal watchers talking. The Associated Press reported that the move demonstrates concern among some palace observers that the couple’s status could allow them to become “a sort of parallel royal court, competing with working members of the royal family.”

Royal commentators had been sounding that alarm all week. Kinsey Schofield told Fox News Digital on Saturday that the Sussexes appeared to want “the best of both worlds,” describing their reported plan to keep a foot in both countries as the “half-in, half-out” arrangement the late Queen rejected in 2020. British broadcaster Helena Chard was blunter, saying the couple needed to “keep relevant” and predicting a renewed push for state-funded police protection.

On X, the letter landed like a verdict, and the reactions split into camps. The hardline faction wanted more, with one user declaring, “King Charles should strip Harry and Meghan Markle of their royal titles,” and another noting, “Being on the website with the working members, contradicts this.” The security-cost hawks saw an opening: “I hope this means no tax payer funded security!” one wrote, while another asked simply, “Who is paying for their security?” One viral reply summed up the mood with a meme reading, “It’s called repercussions for your actions.” Defenders pushed back on the whole exercise. “So why was this statement necessary? Harry and Meghan haven’t said a word or anything to the contrary,” one user wrote, and another offered a pointed history lesson: “Diana was also a private citizen till she died.”

The letter appears to answer at least one of those questions before it could be asked. By instructing the King’s representatives to treat the Sussexes as private individuals, the palace has effectively ruled out official support for any engagements they undertake in Britain.

The first real test arrives quickly. Harry is expected at charity events in the UK this month, and each one will now be read against the palace’s new guidance on what his presence does, and does not, represent.
