A California woman had been out shopping when she came across an alarming scene: children in the back of an SUV, unattended. She guessed the children were “possibly under 6,” prompting her to contact the police and confronting the person who left them alone in a vehicle.
TikToker Extraurhjpv had posted the video of their confrontation on social media. In her video, she waits for the owner of the vehicle to return from TJ Maxx, who she presumes is a babysitter. The TikToker immediately questions her about her decision. “You left your kids in the car!?”
“They’re not my kids,” the caretaker says. The babysitter tries to give an excuse that she was just running in for a drink but this TikToker isn’t hearing it, including keeping the car running with the AC on. The TikToker states, “The cops are on their way.” At this point, the babysitter gets in her vehicle so she can leave.
According to TikTok user Extraurhjpv, it had been an “extremely hot day” in La Mesa. The weather that day, according to AccuWeather, was as high as 90℉.
“Parents need to be notified, she does not need to be a sitter for anyone’s kids,” the TikToker wrote in her video. She also shared that the police did show up but nothing much could be done about it. Since her plates were from “out of town,” she claims the police couldn’t do a wellness check.

Unsurprisingly, people in the comments were just as angry about the situation as the original poster. They were not only outraged by the unintended children, but the seemingly lackadaisical attitude. “Not my kids??!!!!!” Girl whut?” wrote one viewer, as if that made it okay.
Unconvinced by the caretaker’s accuse of leaving the AC on, a viewer pushed back, arguing that was beside the point. The real issue was someone could’ve came along and “decided to snatch em up.”
One user shared a similar experience in San Diego, only with an infant in a car “for like 15 mins” in weather “over 100 degrees.” She shared that she too contacted the police but claimed the police said it wasn’t a crime.
Whether you leave for a few minutes or leave the AC to keep your children cool, it’s unwise to even be gone a few moments. As many viewers brought up, even in the best conditions, someone could have taken them.
