Meghan Markle has answered a week of palace cold shoulders with a flag. Days after King Charles formally declared her and Prince Harry private citizens, the Duchess of Sussex posted a 35-second Instagram montage on Sunday showing the family’s new life in the English countryside, captioned with nothing more than a Union Jack and a red heart emoji, Page Six reported. It is the first glimpse of the Sussexes together in Britain since they left Montecito, California, for the UK on August 26.
The video is deliberately low-key. Harry, 41, appears in a small rowing boat on a lake, rigging up a fishing rod, and the couple is seen strolling hand in hand through woodland in Wellington boots. Their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, appear in brief clips riding a bike down a country path and splashing through puddles, while the family Labrador, Pula, bounds along a fern-lined trail. The montage closes around a fireplace, set to Wham!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.”
The soundtrack may be cheerful, but the timing is pointed. On Monday, a letter authorized by the King and sent by the Lord Chamberlain told government officials, military leaders, and the King’s lord lieutenants that the Sussexes’ position is “akin to private citizens” and that their HRH styles are not to be used. The couple’s spokesperson told the BBC they were “a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance.”
The Sussexes are based at their new home in the Cotswolds, where both children have enrolled in British schools, while retaining the Montecito estate and a holiday home in Portugal. Meghan, 45, was spotted in the area for the first time on Friday, having tea at the members-only Soho Farmhouse.

The montage arrived less than 24 hours after a palace source told Page Six that Prince William was having an “I told you so” moment over the couple’s return. “William and Kate don’t have to do anything and say anything,” the insider said. “History has proven time and again Meghan and Harry will dig their own grave.” The source added that William has still not spoken to his brother.
The Sussex camp has spent the week arguing the “private citizens” label is a fiction. “They are public figures,” a source close to the couple told People. “The idea that they can live a normal, ‘private’ life is sadly not realistic.” Even SNL UK piled on, roasting the couple’s return in its season premiere, as TMZ noted in reporting on Sunday’s video.
