New York USPS Worker Finds $75 Cash Sitting in Customer’s Mailbox: ‘It’s Not Like We Get Paid Enough Anyway’

How very tempting

As a postal service worker, the temptation to do something illegally unethical is always there; for one deliveryman in New York, that temptation might have been planted by his own supervisor. Reddit user TRShark6002 shared a photo on r/USPS of a wad of cash sitting inside a shelved mailbox. What looked to be $75 in cash sat within arm’s reach, but TRShark knew the drill, though he had some fun first.

Maybe today Postal Inspector

“Maybe today, Postal Inspector,“ sighed TRShark, “In this economy.” With the cost of living so high and many people’s wages not getting better, any little bit helps. However, there’s strong doubt that this mysterious pile of bills is meant for TRShark’s taking. Other Redditors comment with mixed opinions.

“Might as well, it’s not like we get paid enough anyway,” remarked a user. “Congratulations. That will buy two bags of groceries,” joked a second commenter. “$75 to lose it all? Times are tough but they ain’t that tough,” a third wrote in disagreement. “That is half of a tank of gas barely,” chuckled a fourth.

Besides the jokers and those urging OP to take the money and run, many commenters share how someone they knew had been fired over this sort of “testing method.” There’s no evidence whether the $75 in the post is a test by the postal inspector or a deal attempted by a local resident. For anyone confused about this “test,” TRShark explains.

OP Claims The Money Wasn’t Planted by His PI

“It’s a running joke within the USPS community that the PI will leave cash in customers’ mailboxes to catch carriers who are stealing,” TRShark detailed. “I do not know who put the money there; I’m assuming the customer did for one reason or another, but in the case of a CBU I can’t fathom the reason. It wasn’t the PI,” he concluded.

In the end, regardless of whether the $75 was a trap, a test, a deal payment, or even a present, no USPS worker is allowed to take more than $20 as a gift. TRShark hasn’t updated anyone on what he decided to do, but based on his comments, it’s safe to assume he left the money alone.
