‘Where Was This During Biden?’: House Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ Patriotic Check-and-Balance Claim Sparks Hypocrisy Charges After CNBC Appearance

Old duty, fresh fight.

Hakeem Jeffries posted a New York CNBC clip calling congressional oversight of the executive “patriotic.” Viewers split over the message, and a familiar question followed: why now, and not during the last administration.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said during a CNBC Squawk Box appearance from Brooklyn, New York, that Congress must check an “out-of-control” executive branch, calling that duty “not partisan” but “patriotic.” He later shared the clip online. Commenters quickly questioned the timing, asking where that standard was during the Biden years.

The video shows Jeffries speaking to the camera in a suit, with the New York skyline behind him. In the clip, he says, “We have a responsibility, of course, as a Congress, to serve as a check and balance on an out-of-control executive branch.” He adds, “That’s not partisan, that’s patriotic.” The footage does not include the questions that came before that answer.

His office later released a transcript of the same interview. In it, Jeffries ties the line to what he called “rampant corruption” in Washington, D.C., including what he described as the “Trump cartel,” and said Democrats would “follow the facts, apply the law, be guided by the Constitution and then let the chips fall where they may.”

Host Andrew Ross Sorkin asked how much of a Democratic House would spend on hearings about President Donald Trump and his family versus affordability. Jeffries also said people were “drowning in this failed Republican economy” and that Democrats’ near-term focus was lowering the cost of living.

Reactions to Jeffries’ ‘Patriotic’ Check-and-Balance Claim

Some viewers treated the remark as a midterm pitch. “Polish that Speaker’s gavel, Leader Jeffries. We’re ready to flip the House,” one commenter wrote. Others said, “Congress should have been harder on House Republicans already.”

More replies questioned the timing. “Why didn’t you do that when Biden was in office?” one user asked. Another wrote, “Where were you during the Biden years?”

A quote post put it more directly: “I felt the same way from 2021-2024.”

Several flipped Jeffries’ own wording. “Congress is the entity that won’t cut spending,” one widely shared reply said. “That is not partisan. Congress is the problem.”

Another wrote, “Citizens must finally act as a check and balance against Congress and the president.”

A third asked, “What exactly is out of control?” and argued the current president “has this under control.”

For now, the clip sits inside a larger fight over who should check whom. Critics keep asking why that standard was not applied the same way during the last administration, while Jeffries’ office frames the remark as part of a closing midterm case on cost and accountability.
