Reddit user MonnoZorro, who works as a night-shift EMT, said she was taking a short break around 12:30 am outside when she and her partner noticed something they couldn’t believe. It was a giant blue laser that was “so large you couldn’t see the end of it” and “seemingly stretched for miles.”
Posting a photo of the scene to r/whatisit, MonnoZorro requested Reddit help to identify exactly what this mysterious beam of light was. While the laser was unquestionably interesting to many, many others found it even more interesting how OP made the midnight sky look so bright and clear. She didn’t hesitate to share details in the comments, explaining that it was taken by her iPhone Air on night mode.
Impressive camera functions aside, another large group of people stole the show in the comment section: gamers. A large blue laser could mean one of many things, based on the video game Redditors joked about. Some claimed it looked like a quest marker, while others jokingly remarked that someone probably just defeated a Wither in Minecraft. But among the most popular game-related replies were those related to Helldivers 2.

Countless others joined in the fun; fortunately for OP, a few people eventually did help her figure out what the laser actually was.
The Laser Turned Out to Allegedly Be From a Music Festival in Downtown Wichita
One Redditor claimed to have been in Wichita, Kansas, the night the beam shot into the sky, saying it was from Somewhere Fest. “Shaq (as DJ Diesel) pressed a big red button on stage before his set, sending the laser into the sky,” they explained. MonnoZorro agreed and marked the comment as the answer solving the post.
While plenty of people would have hoped the blue beacon was something more sci-fi or fantastically magical, it was just a performer at a downtown event with an overpowered light.
