A Wisconsin woman says she decided not to attend her best friend’s wedding after receiving an unexpected $350 Venmo request from the bride. The wedding was not a destination event, and the woman said every guest received the same charge. What began as excitement over attending her friend’s big day quickly turned into a dispute over who should pay for the celebration.

Have you ever been charged a “wedding fee” for choosing to attend a wedding? Am I wrong? Apparently this would go towards the venue, menu , band etc. first of all I feel like that is a lot to charge someone. Second – you invited people. #wedding #bridesmaids #fyp #foryoupage #viral

The woman shared her experience on TikTok under the username .hunter0327, where the story quickly drew attention from viewers. At first, she thought the $350 request had been sent by mistake. When she contacted the bride, she learned that it was being treated as a “wedding fee.” The bride explained that the wedding expenses had gotten out of hand and that the money would cover each guest’s share of the decorations, food, venue and band.

The Wisconsin woman had already purchased her shoes, was paying for her own hair and makeup, taken time off work and booked a hotel for the wedding. She also learned that the charge was not limited to the bridal party. Every guest was apparently being asked to pay the same $350.

The conversation became even more awkward when the bride brought up the wedding gift. She pointed out that the woman had not given her a wedding present yet and suggested the $350 could simply count as the gift, meaning she would not need to buy another present.

Wisconsin Woman’s $350 Fee Stuns Viewers

The comments quickly turned against the idea of charging wedding guests, with viewers questioning how an invitation had somehow become a $350 bill. Many said the Wisconsin woman had already spent enough on the wedding before receiving the unexpected request. “That’s not an invite. That’s selling tickets to a wedding,” one user wrote.

Others argued that if the wedding was becoming too expensive, the couple should cut back, choose a cheaper venue or simply plan a celebration they could afford. Commenters shared examples of backyard weddings, borrowed chairs, homemade food and other cheaper options that still allowed couples to celebrate without passing unexpected costs on to their guests.

Then came the more chaotic suggestions. Some encouraged the woman to return her wedding purchases and keep the money for groceries and gas. One commenter even suggested asking for her previous shower gift back.

For the Wisconsin woman, the $350 request settled the question. The wedding invitation may have arrived with a plus-one, but the Venmo request apparently came with a cancellation.
