Vivek Ramaswamy’s heavily promoted Ohio town hall was supposed to take place inside a university venue capable of seating hundreds. Instead, the Republican gubernatorial nominee ended up speaking inside a downtown Tiffin party room with space for roughly 50, and some Ohio Reddit users wasted little time turning the downsized event into political ammunition.
State Rep. Gary Click had spent nearly two weeks promoting Ramaswamy’s Oct. 1 appearance at Tiffin University’s Marion Center, which can hold as many as 450 people in theater seating. By Thursday, however, the event had been moved to Reino’s Catering & Party Room. A Seneca County Republican source had told TiffinOhio.net beforehand that turnout was expected to be “very low.” Organizers did not publicly explain the switch.
That was enough for commenters on r/Ohio, many openly hostile to Ramaswamy and Republicans, to celebrate what they viewed as an embarrassing campaign moment.
“He’s a dud!” one commenter wrote.
Others went straight for the venue change itself. One joked, “Pretty soon it’ll be in a walk in closet,” while another compared the crowd size to a child’s birthday party.
Ohio critics see an opening, but not everyone is celebrating yet
The mockery came alongside something more politically revealing: even Ramaswamy’s critics were warning each other not to mistake one poorly attended event for an election result.
“Exactly. This means nothing. Vote,” one Reddit user wrote after another argued Republican voters could still turn out for Ramaswamy regardless of whether they attended campaign events.
Another commenter was even more explicit about the tension, writing that they wanted Ramaswamy to lose but remained pessimistic about that outcome.
Ramaswamy is the Republican nominee for Ohio governor and faces Democrat Amy Acton in November. That makes the Tiffin episode politically tempting for opponents to seize upon, but the Reddit reaction itself shows they understand the difference between an embarrassing photograph and a ballot count.
The strange evening did not end in Tiffin. Protesters gathered outside Reino’s while Ramaswamy spoke, and afterward he traveled to a second conservative gathering in Risingsun. He later incorrectly identified Risingsun as being in Seneca County. The village is actually in Wood County.
For Ramaswamy’s Ohio critics, that geography mistake became one more detail to add to a night already tailor-made for ridicule.
Of course, the campaign still has an election to fight. But on this particular night, Ramaswamy’s opponents were more than happy to enjoy the smaller room.
