If health insurance wasn’t harsh enough on Americans’ bank accounts, auto insurance can be a financial drain too, and one Nevada 18-year-old wasn’t ready for what they were quoted. Reddit user Firedrgn0717 had recently purchased a Ford F-150 in cash for $2,250, which sounds like a decent deal until the model’s year is mentioned: 1992. That said, Firedrgn couldn’t believe how much Progressive was quoting them for auto insurance: $814.31 a month.
Needless to say, nearly all the Redditors tuning into Firedrgn’s post on this outrageously expensive insurance agreed that such a monthly payment was unacceptable. Even though OP has claimed they’ve never been pulled over or been involved in any accidents, that couldn’t save them from the money sinkhole of the alleged “state minimum insurance.” For reference, the $814.31 is allegedly for liability insurance.
Firedrgn says they tried to inquire why the cost was so high, and “all they had to say was it’s because of my age and where I live.” They initially paid $350 for the first month, but now subsequent bills will be over twice that. “My credit doesn’t exist, as I’ve never had a loan, credit card, or anything else related to that,” OP added.
Commenters were in disbelief. “Our economy has become a joke. This is a flat-out scam,” remarked a user. “I’m paying $1300 a year for 25k guaranteed value on a 2019 SUV, bro, you’re being robbed blind,” said another Redditor. Several non-Americans chimed in with their opinions: “You guys are getting robbed in the States. Just like in your healthcare system, you cannot insure greed.”
On the flip side, several Redditors attempt to logically explain the key factors as to why Firedrgn would have to pay this. Some claim it’s the fact that an 18-year-old is driving a 34-year-old car lacking modern safety features. Others blame OP’s lack of credit history. These answers aren’t wrong, as any and all of these might factor into the monthly bill.
Firedrgn says they’re not going to pay, not because they’re planning to break the law, but because they plan to move out of state and hopefully find better insurers.
