New Jersey Confession as Michael Douglas Admits the 40-Year Lie About His Secret Affair With Kathleen Turner and She Answers: ‘Good Heavens, What a Fuss’

Shocked?!

Hollywood spent four decades asking whether the Romancing the Stone chemistry was real, and both stars spent those decades saying no. Michael Douglas just put the truth in writing, with Kathleen Turner’s blessing.

The New Jersey legend, 82, comes clean in his upcoming memoir One Helluva Ride, in an excerpt he shared with People: “The truth is that during the production of ‘Romancing the Stone,’ Kathleen and I fell hard for each other and began a relationship.” Forty years of denials, reversed in one sentence by the man who wrote he was “knocked sideways” by Turner “like every other guy in the world.“

Remarkably, Douglas quotes the lie itself. For decades, the pair told the world the same thing: “The chemistry I had with Kathleen Turner was so strong, audiences have been certain for years that we were in a relationship together while making the film. Yes, we were both, as Kathleen said, ‘terrible flirts,’ and yes, we were both tempted, but nothing ever happened between us.” That, per the memoir, is what they “consistently claimed.” It was never true.

The real story unfolded on the 1984 Mexico set, where Douglas was separated from Diandra though still married, and the romance stayed invisible even to director Robert Zemeckis and Danny DeVito. Per the book, “Kathleen and I never hit a rough spot.“

The spell broke once. “The magic spell of the set was broken when Diandra brought Cameron down to Mexico,” Douglas writes, recalling that Diandra grew suspicious. Turner, he says, “didn’t want to interfere,” and the pair ended things, with Douglas returning to his marriage for his young family’s sake. He and Diandra divorced in 1995.

Turner, 72, answered Friday with the statement only she could deliver: “Good heavens, what a fuss about something 40 years ago! I love Michael and I look forward to enjoying the book.” The classiest detail sits beneath it: Douglas asked her permission before putting their secret in print.

The receipts were hiding in plain sight all along. Turner came within a breath of it in a years-old Guardian interview: “I think we might have been falling in love” before Diandra’s Mexico visit ended it, adding, “But oh my, that attention is delicious.” The pair made three films together, from the Stone to The War of the Roses, stayed close for four decades, and kept the one secret Hollywood wanted most.

The Secret That Kept for Forty Years

The internet took the news as a forty-year-old spoiler. “If you’re an 80s baby or older, you’re not really surprised by this,” one reply shrugged, while the sharpest take found romance in the cover-up itself: “lying about a romance for pr is so old hollywood it circles back to being charming, nobody has the patience for that cover story anymore.” The filmography supplied the punchline: “Was the War of the Roses when they broke up?“

Two legends, three movies, one affair, and a cover story held until he asked if he could finally tell it.

She said yes. Good heavens, indeed.
