‘Make America White Again’: Critics Challenge Texas Rep. Brandon Gill After He Says the Left Wants to Upend America’s Culture Out of ‘Pure Hatred’

Wait, which culture?

Texas Rep. Brandon Gill posted a video on X stating that conservatives seek to preserve a “specific culture and heritage” that built America for their children, and that the modern left wants to upend that culture out of “pure hatred” of the nation and its history. The post, from the congressman’s personal account, drew thousands of replies questioning what culture he meant and whether the claim defines who counts as American. Online users reacted with both support for conserving national heritage and criticism that the remarks amount to gatekeeping.

We call ourselves conservatives because we understand that America was built by a specific culture and heritage that we want to conserve for our kids.

The video shows Gill speaking on Fox News’s “Sunday Night in America” with Trey Gowdy. In the clip, he says, “conservatives want to conserve this country” and “we have a specific culture, and we have a heritage that we love, and we want to continue to thrive, and we want our kids and grandkids to have the same opportunities that we had.”

He then describes what he calls “left-wing populism” as “this move to fundamentally upend American society, America’s system of governance,” citing platforms that include “defunding local police departments or reopening our border or abolishing the Senate or the US Supreme Court,” and says, “I think that it’s fundamentally motivated by a hatred for America.”

The accompanying post text states that conservatives want to conserve the culture and heritage that built America for their children, and that “the modern left wants to fundamentally upend that culture because they are motivated by a pure hatred of our nation and its history.”

The footage is an excerpt of the interview and does not show the full exchange or what was said before or after the clip. Gill has made similar arguments about culture and Democratic policy in other recent appearances, according to his public comments.

How Viewers Are Responding to the Remarks

Some users backed the argument. One wrote, “Brandon Gill is the youngest, most intelligent man in Congress. The future President. The left will not take our heritage or our children,” and added, “We will not be silent and neither will the men that love this country and their families.”

Another said, “Rep. Gill Had A Great Head On His Shoulders,” and that he “Knows Lord & The Family Comes First.”

Others questioned the framing. One commenter wrote, “Brandon Gill declaring that REAL Americans belong to one ‘specific culture and heritage,’ while everyone who disagrees with him supposedly ‘hates’ America,” and said, “You don’t get to appoint yourself the gatekeeper of who is American,” arguing the Constitution does not require shared ancestry or culture.

Another replied, “You’re not smart enough to pull off dog whistles, Brandon.”

A separate user asked, “MAWA: Make America White Again! Am I right, Brandon? That’s what you mean by ‘special’ heritage.”

One noted that defining conservatism as conserving a culture “is a real strand of the word,” while calling the claim of “pure hatred” a motive assigned by the post rather than something the clip demonstrates.

Gill’s remarks now sit alongside a wider exchange over what conservatives mean by preserving American culture and how that claim is received. The clip adds one more moment to an ongoing debate about heritage, politics, and who defines the country’s direction.
