A tenant thought she was losing her mind when she started noticing small, creepy changes in her two-bedroom Ohio apartment. A window she remembered closing was cracked open, the bathroom light was mysteriously left on, and her cat’s bowl had been moved. Her husband thought she was perhaps just being forgetful, but after installing a doorbell camera, the couple realized that was not the case at all.
Reddit user NobleRivet95164 explained her situation on r/legal, saying she and her husband had installed a camera to keep watch for package thieves. However, what they discovered was far more appalling: they allegedly caught their landlord snooping in and out of their home without any notice, four times. “He never knocked, and we never received a text, a call, an email or a note on the door before or after,” NobleRivet wrote, chillingly.
Apparently, the landlord stays in the couple’s house for around 20 minutes before leaving, and OP says it’s always during an hour when both she and her husband are at work. Like normal leases, theirs says the landlord can enter with “reasonable notice” for important reasons like repairs and such. However, NobleRivet says they have no necessary repairs or any inspections scheduled.
Reddit Believes the Landlord Is Installing Hidden Cameras
That said, OP asks Reddit what to do about it. “I really don’t want to move, we like the place. I just want it to stop and I want to do this the right way,” she explains. Without hesitation, the majority of Redditors in the comments believe the landlord is up to no good, possibly unlawful surveillance. “Honestly, I’d be on the lookout for cameras. Something is giving predator vibes,” wrote a user.
“It’s definitely a lease violation,” agreed a second commenter. A third claiming to be a property manager said, “this is absolutely not allowed. I agree with other comments urging you to install inconspicuous indoor cameras.”
In the end, NobleRivet has yet to report on what she plans to do about the landlord, though plenty of users are left wondering what he could have been up to in that apartment. Forgetting to turn off the bathroom light or close a window before leaving is one thing, but moving the couple’s cat bowl from one side of the kitchen to another: that’s just bizarre.
