A bizarre change of heart in Ohio is going viral after one aggrieved former Trump supporter flipped from Republican to Democrat in the busiest way he can: by canvassing for the Democratic Party. Apparently, this political turn was triggered by his losing his job along with more than a thousand others, though some critics remain skeptical of the former Trump voter.
Kyle Bos, a 30-year-old father and United Auto Workers member from Springfield, Ohio, says he has had enough. After International Motors shut down operations at two local facilities and left roughly 1,341 workers without jobs, Bos says he plans to spend the weeks leading up to the November midterms campaigning for Democrats.
According to Bos, the political frustration is now personal. He has pointed to the cost of groceries, uncertainty about finding another job, and the financial pressure facing his family, which is expecting another child in January. “Something has to change politically in this country,” Bos told the Associated Press, saying that things “just kept getting worse and worse and worse.”
His anger was particularly directed at Trump’s proposal to give Americans $5,000 payments if Republicans maintain control of Congress. Bos did not see the proposal as the economic relief Trump supporters might expect. “It feels like a bribe, a slap in the face,” he said.
Although the factory’s closure stemmed from the end of International Motors’ manufacturing agreement and its decision to sell the facility, the layoffs became a potent political backdrop for workers already frustrated by inflation and Trump’s economic policies. Roshel has said it plans to eventually expand employment at the facilities, and some former workers expect they could be rehired. Still, the uncertainty hasn’t softened Bos’ political break.
People Online Are Torn
The former Trump voter’s decision has generated plenty of skepticism online, with some commenters arguing that losing his own job simply made him notice problems that had already been affecting other Americans. “Now it’s affecting ME!” one commenter wrote, bringing attention to the usual catalyst for many former MAGA supporters.
Another commenter recalled growing up in a heavily Republican environment and eventually abandoning the party after losing a job during an economic downturn. “Sometimes it takes a serious kick like losing your livelihood to get you to actually start paying attention,” the person wrote. Not everyone was impressed by Bos’ conversion. “Voted for Trump 3 times? Nah no forgiveness from me,” one commenter said.
Others were more willing to give him credit for taking action. “At least he’s not saying ‘What choice did I have?’ and still voting for Republicans,” another wrote, adding that admitting a mistake and attempting to correct it was worth something. Some critics remained convinced Bos could eventually return to the Republican Party if Democrats failed to deliver the economic improvements he wanted.
Whether Bos’ political transformation lasts remains to be seen. But for now, a man who once repeatedly voted for Trump says he is switching sides and intends to try to persuade other Ohio voters to do the same.
