New Jersey Man Tries to ‘Car Catfish’ Buyer With Scratch-Ridden SUV After Sharing Spotless Photos: ‘I Decided To Pass’

A man in New Jersey was excited to purchase an SUV from a potential seller, who had already sent him photos of the vehicle. Expecting only a minor dent, the man was horrified to find undisclosed scratches all over the SUV. According to him, the individual almost “car catfished” him.

The pictures he sent made the car look pretty clean, but once it showed up there was damage on almost every panel that I couldn’t see beforehand. At that point I decided to pass, and he felt like I wasted his time. How would you have handled this situation? Would you still make an offer or walk away? #carsales #cardealer #usedcars #carselling #pov

TikToker GregGotCars (Greg) shared the interaction on TikTok. He is a content creator and car dealer who often posts interactions with potential clients such as the aforementioned one. The clip attached above went viral in a few days. It garnered 458,200 views, 19,200 likes, and more than 500 comments.

The New Jersey car dealer exited his shop and went on to check the SUV. The seller immediately started talking about the small dent shown in previously sent photos. What Greg did not expect, however, was to walk out to find a scratch-ridden vehicle.

“You didn’t tell me this thing’s all scratched up. This wasn’t in the photos. This wasn’t included. There are scratches in every panel,” Greg said. He then asked, “This is the one with 20,000 miles?” When the seller told him it was, he added, “Looks like it went through 20,000 miles of rainforest.”

Lots Of Scratches

And Greg’s assessment was true. The SUV showed very noticeable scratches on all its panels. He further called out the seller by pulling up the photos he previously received. Greg noticed the car looked wet in the pictures, possibly to hide or mask the scratched paint.

Greg wasn’t willing to make the sale, and he wrote in the clip’s description, “At that point I decided to pass, and he felt like I wasted his time.” The seller did mention that he had driven for an hour to arrive at Greg’s location. The New Jersey car dealer, meanwhile, told him he hadn’t wasted the man’s time, as he had deliberately hidden the SUV’s scratches, Greg said.

Finally, the now-non-seller tried to remove what he deemed nothing more than surface scratches. Despite his rubbing efforts, the scratches remained, and no deal was made.

Reactions

Greg’s video sparked many responses, mostly from viewers who sided with him. One said, “That car has been clocked for sure.” Another one commented, “I would have walked away after the first 30 seconds of seeing the car.”

Other viewers, meanwhile, sided with the seller. One wrote, “Those would buff right out. They are surface scratches.” Another one added, “He’s right. They are surface scratches.” Other users disagreed vehemently with these scratch enthusiasts.

Hopefully, those scratches will be taken care of shortly. Otherwise, mentioning them before an attempted sale might be the way to go.
