A Texas middle school is at the center of a district investigation after a 12-year-old boy left class frightened by something a substitute teacher allegedly said to him. The student lives with anxiety, and his mother says the encounter shook him badly enough that he asked to skip an after-school commitment.
The school district has acknowledged that the incident took place, but it is saying little else while its review continues. The boy’s family has since told its side of the story on camera, and the account is now spreading across social media.
The video was shared on Instagram by @antonioguillen and on X by @LongTimeHistory. According to a news report in the video, the incident took place at Sam Rayburn Middle School in San Antonio, Texas.
The boy told the reporter, “Teacher got angry. He was saying that I am going to call the police, that I am going to call immigration.”
The boy’s mother, Amanda San Miguel, said her son alerted her with a text message. “Can I miss practice? Because a sub said he was going to call ICE and the police,” the message said. San Miguel added, “My son is really scared, and he has a lot of anxiety.”
According to the report cited in the video, more than 86% of the students at the school are of Latino origin. The district confirmed the incident happened but declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation.
The boy said he wanted to ask the teacher how he could say that, given that “you’re Mexican.”
San Miguel said the principal assured her the substitute will no longer work for Northside Independent School District, and that the paperwork to fire him has already been signed. The report did not name the teacher.
Internet Reacts to Texas Substitute Teacher’s Alleged ICE Threat
The incident has drawn strong reactions from commenters. One X user wrote, “Horrific racists should not be around children.” Another commenter wrote, “Teacher needs to be charged with child abuse.”
A third wrote, “Sick. Just sick. If you’re an educator of children, you educate them. You do NOT pull this. They are children!”
A fourth user wrote, “Good thing the sub was fired. He should never be allowed to run a classroom or practice again. Things we are doing to fellow Americans.” A fifth commenter wrote, “This is what discipline looks like under the dictatorship of capital: authority enforced through fear and coercion.”
For now, the district has said only that the matter remains under investigation, and the findings have not been made public.
