There are many bizarre power-ups and zany abilities in the Dragon Ball universe. But one that really caught people’s attention was the concept of fusion. There are a number of styles to this technique. If one wanted to get technical, the idea’s existed since the Namek Saga, when Piccolo fused with Nail. But when people talk fusion in Dragon Ball, two things come immediately to mind – the Fusion Dance and the Potara Earrings. Introduced during the Buu Saga, Fusion acted as a means for two characters to temporarily become one. During the arc, this led to the first appearance of Gotenks, from the Fusion Dance, and fan-favorite Vegito, from the Potara. But one Fusion came about during the anime film, Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn. This was Goku and Vegeta’s other combination – Gogeta. And a Dragon Ball Super animator may have just teased his debut in Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
It’s no secret that fans of the franchise love to speculate. “Who is stronger, X or Y?” is a fairly frequent question. Vegito and Gogeta sit at the center of many of those conversations. Unfortunately, there was never really a real grounds for comparison. The anime films aren’t canon to the TV anime and apparently handle power scaling differently. So the only means of comparing the feats of Vegito and Gogeta, for a long time, was to comparing SSJ4 Gogeta from GT to Super Saiyan Vegito. But the canon validity of GT is… up for debate. Meanwhile, Vegito got a new form in Dragon Ball Super (presumably two, if he also knows Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken, like Goku, and just didn’t use it for any number of reasons).
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F aren’t canon to the TV anime, technically. Instead, they were adapted into arcs for the anime. Dragon Ball Super: Broly marks the first of these movies that is canon. Yoshihiko Umakoshi stated on a Niko Niko broadcast that he was working on Dragon Ball Super and ‘practicing [drawing] Gogeta’. This, of course, could be nothing more than an exercise. Something he’s doing to keep himself sharp. But no doubt many are wondering why he’d be practicing Gogeta, specifically. This only fuels speculation that the character might make another appearance. And what better way to celebrate his canon debut than by featuring in another film where he may even have Super Saiyan Blue in his bag of tricks?
