Republican New York attorney general nominee Saritha Komatireddy posted a video on X Thursday night after a debate with Democratic incumbent Letitia James, stating that New Yorkers deserve an attorney general who enforces the law and puts public safety ahead of political interests. The clip, shared from the New York contest, drew thousands of replies as users reacted online. Many commenters backed Komatireddy and called for James to be replaced, while others defended the incumbent or questioned the challenger’s path to office.
The video shows a segment of the Spectrum News NY1 debate for state attorney general, with the on-screen banner reading “TOPIC: ELECTION INTEGRITY.” In the clip, Komatireddy says that “every time James mentions Donald Trump,” viewers should remember “it is because she can’t defend her failing record.” She adds that James “just admitted that the Medicaid fraud unit went from first to worst under her watch and she has no good explanation for that.”
Komatireddy then says she has “the President’s endorsement,” and also the support of “people that are very critical of the President,” including “Elisha Wiesel, the son of Elie Wiesel,” who she says endorsed her because of “a surge of antisemitic crime under Tish James” that James is “doing nothing about.”
She closes by saying she has “the endorsement of 42 sheriffs across New York,” calling it “stunning” that “the current sheriffs of New York endorsed a challenger instead of the sitting attorney general that they have worked with for eight years.”
In the post accompanying the clip, Komatireddy wrote: “Tonight, I’m making one thing clear: New Yorkers deserve an Attorney General who fights for them, not political interests. The law must be enforced, criminals must be held accountable, and public safety must come first.”
News accounts of the Thursday night debate in New York described Komatireddy arguing that the office had been used for political purposes and James responding that her opponent was tied to President Trump and lacked knowledge of the attorney general’s role.
How Viewers Are Responding to the Debate Clip
Some users backed Komatireddy and urged a change in the office. One wrote, “FIRE TISH JAMES.” Another said, “You are killing it. She can’t stop talking about Trump. Nothing positive about what she will do! Keep it up!”
A third commented, “Vote Red down ballot, New York! Save yourselves! You can do it!”
Others focused on James’s record or the debate format. One user wrote that “NYers are still paying James’ legal defense bills” and urged a vote for “a real AG.”
Another said moderators “only cut you off and let her ramble” and claimed James “mentioned President Trump 8 times.”
Not all replies were supportive. One commenter wrote, “An endorsement from Donald Trump is all I need to never vote for her.” Another said, “Sorry, Saritha Latisha is too good to compete with. Maybe when she retires.”
A further reply questioned whether the remarks would be followed through, writing, “You have the lip service down; let’s see if you have the chops to follow through.”
The clip is now part of the wider conversation around New York’s attorney general race ahead of the November election. Viewers remain split between calls to prioritize public safety and questions about whether the exchange changes the contest.
