Country singer Kacey Musgraves is going viral for her biting response to former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem after the Republican took a swipe at her over her support for Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico. To add salt to the wound, Musgraves also made the clapback centered around a past controversy involving her dog, Cricket.
The feud erupted after Talarico attended Musgraves’ Middle of Nowhere tour stop in Dallas over the weekend in October. The Texas Democrat shared a photo with the singer on social media, thanking her for having him at the concert. Noem, who was fired from her cabinet position in March, apparently wasn’t impressed. Taking to X, she declared, “I’ll take Ella Langley over Kacey Musgraves any day.” She added, “And if I’m choosin’ Texas, I’ll take Ken Paxton over James Talarico.”
Musgraves wasn’t about to let the jab slide. Quoting Noem’s post on Monday, the Grammy-winning singer delivered a pointed comeback that referenced the former secretary’s controversial account of killing her dog. “I don’t think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you would have shot it,” Musgraves wrote.
The response quickly attracted attention online, with social media users celebrating the singer’s sharp reference to Noem’s past. “Slay, Queen,” one X user wrote, while another declared, “Holy [expletive], that’s amazing.”
One commenter described the exchange as watching Musgraves “stuff Kristi into a locker,” adding that it was among the most entertaining moments of their week. Another wrote, “Kacey woke up and chose violence. Here for it.”
The Controversy Surrounding Kristi Noem’s Dog
Noem faced widespread backlash in 2024 after her memoir revealed that she had shot and killed Cricket, her 14-month-old dog, in a gravel pit because she considered the animal difficult to manage. She defended the decision as an example of her willingness to make tough choices, but the story drew intense criticism.
The latest controversy also highlighted the political divide within country music. Musgraves, a longtime Texas resident, has openly supported immigrant children’s rights and LGBTQ+ rights, positions that have drawn criticism from conservative commentators.
Some commenters also pointed out that Ella Langley, whom Noem invoked in her post, is from Alabama rather than Texas. Consequently, Langley or her team subsequently appeared to remove her X account’s tag from Kristi Noem’s post, although the reason was not publicly confirmed.
Meanwhile, Talarico has attracted support from other country music figures, including Willie Nelson, who recently endorsed his Senate campaign. The Texas race is drawing unusual attention, with polling cited by Variety showing Talarico leading Republican Ken Paxton by 47.1 percent to 43.6 percent. For Musgraves, the exchange with Noem offered another opportunity to make her views known. And judging by the online reaction, her dog-related punchline landed exactly as intended.
