Maryland Rep Andy Harris Rages as Voters Laugh at His Gas Price Defense, Snaps ‘You Are Rude!’ and Walks Off

Not his finest hour

Maryland Republican Rep. Andy Harris turned a debate over soaring fuel prices into a viral spectacle Tuesday night after snapping at an audience member who laughed as he tried to blame Democrats for the crisis.

Harris, the longtime representative for Maryland’s 1st Congressional District and chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, was debating Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz in Cambridge when the exchange erupted. More than 150 Eastern Shore residents attended the League of Women Voters event.

“The facts are that diesel prices have gone up,” Harris began, before arguing Democratic policies and environmental regulations were responsible.

The audience was not buying it. Laughter and jeers interrupted Harris, who quickly singled out one woman.

“This is the problem!” he fired back. “You all say you believe there’s a First Amendment, but only if you agree with you. You should let me finish the sentence, ma’am. You are rude!”

That First Amendment complaint predictably went viral on Reddit. One of the most popular responses mocked Harris’s interpretation of free speech: “The first amendment means you’re not allowed to laugh at me.” Another simply declared: “People are sick of hearing the nonsense, Andy.”

Harris Picked a Brutal Moment to Blame Democrats

The problem for Harris is that diesel prices have become considerably harder for Republicans to explain away.

President Donald Trump recently announced a deal with Vladimir Putin to bring additional Russian diesel onto American and global markets after fuel prices surged amid major supply disruptions and the Iran conflict. Reuters reports that the arrangement immediately provides more than 300,000 metric tons, with further shipments planned.

Analysts have questioned whether those volumes will make much difference. Diesel futures actually climbed 4.5 percent Tuesday, while retail diesel averaged around $6.28 per gallon nationally.

That makes Harris’s attempt to redirect blame politically awkward, particularly when Trump himself is scrambling to increase supply.

The Reddit reaction seized on that contradiction. One commenter joked that “the facts are getting in the way of his feelings,” while another observed that the First Amendment “allows him to say what he wants, and also allows people to laugh at him.”

That second point is broadly correct. The First Amendment principally restrains government interference with private speech. It does not guarantee a congressman an audience free from ridicule.

There is one important correction to some reporting around the race, too. The limited public polling does not show Schwartz leading Harris by 13 points. The only qualifying poll currently listed by Call the Map, conducted in July, had Harris ahead 52 percent to 39 percent.

So Harris may still be favored to win. But Tuesday’s eruption offered something polling cannot easily measure: the sight of a veteran politician discovering, in real time, that having the microphone does not mean the crowd has to stop laughing.
