Ken Paxton’s campaign has found itself in the middle of yet another controversy after newly leaked audio revealed that Paxton criticized his ally, Gov. Greg Abbott, describing him as “struggling.” The incident prompted mockery from liberal-leaning Texans, who seemed somewhat surprised to see the politician involved in so many controversies.
As reported by Rolling Stone, Paxton claimed that Gov. Abbott was struggling to secure reelection and agreed that Republicans would likely lose seats in the state, according to the leaked audio. He reportedly made the comments during a private donor event in Washington, D.C. Paxton was also said to believe that Democrat Gina Hinojosa was “still close” to becoming governor. The audio was allegedly recorded by an attendee who opposed Paxton.
This is far from the only controversy involving Paxton to emerge in recent weeks. Earlier this month, for example, reports revealed that Paxton had attended a gathering in Dubai with men indicted in a healthcare fraud case.
Ken Paxton Criticized by Liberal-Leaning Texans
Ken Paxton quickly became the subject of mockery and criticism on r/Texas after reports of the leaked audio began circulating online. Many commenters seemed to find it amusing that Paxton’s name kept popping up in unfavorable situations: “I love that if the republicans lose Texas, it will basically be this guy’s fault.”
Some even suggested that members of his own team disliked him: “It’s crazy this man’s audio keeps on getting leaked. Many people think someone on Paxton’s team is an ally of Cornyn, and they’re mad because John didn’t win the primaries.” Others responded: “I don’t think his campaign wants him to win.” One commenter replied: “Entirely believable considering his own staffers reported him to the FBI. It seems most of the people closest to him dislike him.”
Not everyone was convinced that Paxton would lose, however. One person commented: “Paxton is running on continuing his grifting but at the national level. He is a very dislikeable guy who sees everyone he meets as a possible victim. His lies about Talarico reveal his lack of character and show he cannot compete against him in honest discourse. He will embarrass Texas if he is elected.”
Paxton still has to win a tight race against Democrat James Talarico to secure a seat in the U.S. Senate. With Talarico reportedly leading in the polls, Paxton faces an uphill battle.
