A little help at the pump is usually welcome, but a $10 gas card giveaway in Michigan has raised more than a few eyebrows. Kristi Rogers, wife of Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, handed out the cards at a Detroit gas station while promoting her husband’s plan to suspend gas taxes. However, the gesture didn’t quite land with everyone, as some Michigan Reddit users questioned just how far $10 would get drivers these days.
As reported by The Michigan Chronicle, Rogers visited the Freedom Fuel gas station on Detroit’s east side on Wednesday, October 14, handing out $10 gift cards to customers. The giveaway was part of an effort to highlight her husband’s calls to suspend gas taxes, with Michigan drivers continuing to feel the pinch at the pump. Some customers were happy to receive the unexpected boost, although the reaction online told a rather different story.
Notably, the giveaway comes at a time when Michigan drivers are already digging deeper into their pockets to fill up. According to AAA, gas prices jumped 19 cents in the week leading up to October 12, reaching an average of $4.66 per gallon. That’s $1.73 more than the same time last year, with a typical 15-gallon fill-up costing around $70. With prices still painfully high, it’s easy to see why a $10 gas card might not go very far.
Michigan Reddit Users Take Jabs at $10 Gas Card Giveaway
Over on Reddit, users wasted little time poking fun at the giveaway. One commenter asked, “$10? That a joke or a slap in the face?” while another dryly remarked, “Gosh, a whole ten dollars.” Someone else sarcastically wrote, “Wow thank you so much for enough gas money to cover half of my journey home.” Clearly, the modest amount wasn’t winning everyone over.
Meanwhile, other commenters turned their attention to the politics behind the gesture. One joked, “Remember, the reason you need this $10! Oh wait…don’t think about why you need this $10,” while another imagined the campaign’s sales pitch: “Sir, do you want a better life at some point? Or $10 now? Eh? Eh?!?!” The sarcasm continued elsewhere in the discussion, with one user questioning whether a $10 gift card could really influence anyone’s vote.
While some Detroit drivers were happy to receive a little extra help at the pump, the online reaction shows that not everyone was impressed. With gas prices already putting a strain on Michigan households, even $10 can make a difference, but it’s unlikely to stretch very far these days. Whether the giveaway wins over any voters remains to be seen, although one thing’s for sure: Rogers’ campaign has certainly given people plenty of fuel for thought.
