Private property security does what private property security does, but that doesn’t mean anyone has to agree with it or wants to. That said, Reddit user Hydratedstoner and commenters on her post expressed extreme disdain for a security guard who allegedly shooed her out of a parking lot for eating food she’d just bought. She had just shopped at a grocery store in Southern California after a trip to the gym when security confronted her while eating rotisserie chicken in her car.
Hydratedstoner said she had purchased over $100 worth of groceries, and the rotisserie chicken smelled a little too good to wait until she got back home. “Two minutes into my late lunch, I get a harsh knock on my window from store security telling me to move along,” she recalled, frustrated by his alleged aggressive behavior. OP says she even parked further from the entrance to make sure not to take up other customers’ spots, but that didn’t stop the guard from targeting her from staying two minutes too long.
The Woman Claimed She Was Considering Choosing Another Grocery Store Over This Nosy Security Guard
“It sounds ridiculous but I genuinely think I’m changing grocery stores,” Hydratedstoner wrote angrily, and plenty of people didn’t blame her. “These guys will let folks walk out of the store with a hundred dollars in merchandise because they can’t actually do anything about theft in the moment. But will tell a paying customer to leave,” remarked a commenter. “Can’t a person just sit in their car and eat chicken? Apparently not,” chimed in a second user.
“What type of power trip would you have to be on to do this to someone?” questioned a third. “What was the crime, eating a succulent chicken meal?” memed a fourth. Several people brought OP’s skin color into question, asking her whether she was black, based on her behavior with the chicken. She responded, saying that she’s a “multi-racial woman” but didn’t take too kindly to the accusations. “Why do we need to drag race into it?” asked Hydratedstoner.
Some people pointed out that it’s unlawful for a business to tow a car in a public parking lot in California unless an hour has passed. However, that applies to towing a vehicle, not chasing someone out of their car for only two minutes after they ate food they purchased outside the store. Either way, if this security guard’s goal was to make a paying customer uncomfortable and discourage them from returning, he did his job a little too well.
