California Stunner as Christina Applegate Reveals Her MS of Five Years Was a Misdiagnosis and the Mystery Illness Remains: ‘I’ve Gotten Worse’

For five years, Christina Applegate built a life around a diagnosis: the cane, the candor, the podcast. On Tuesday she revealed a doctor walked in and took the diagnosis away, and she cried, and not from joy.

The California star, 54, announced on Tuesday’s return episode of her MeSsy podcast that she does not have multiple sclerosis, per TMZ, with her doctor delivering the news that the condition she publicly disclosed in August 2021, and has navigated in front of the whole world since, was a misdiagnosis. The announcement came as the show returned from the sabbatical it began in March, and it explains what that long quiet was partly about: she needed time to process the unthinkable.

Christina Is Back (Part 1)

Her reaction is the story, because it runs opposite to every instinct. “I was, like, not happy at all. Everybody else was so happy,” Applegate said, describing tears that had nothing to do with relief. The reason is brutal in its simplicity: whatever is wrong with her is still wrong. Her symptoms persist, and by her own account they have gotten worse. A misdiagnosis undone does not mean recovery; it means the suffering stays while the explanation leaves.

The five years being rewritten were among the most public health chapters in Hollywood. Applegate revealed the MS diagnosis while finishing Dead to Me, accepted her Walk of Fame star with a cane, spoke with rare bluntness about her body’s decline, and built MeSsy itself around the diagnosis with cohost Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who has lived with MS since 2001. The show was created as a lifeline for two women walking the same road, which makes the new reality strange to even type: the podcast built around a shared disease now belongs, in that sense, to one of them.

No replacement diagnosis has been named, and this piece will not guess at one. The record’s backdrop is already documented: she was hospitalized in Los Angeles this April and discharged in August, a four-month stay that overlapped the podcast’s pause.

The medicine behind the reversal gets its own airing on the show. Dr. Marwa Kaisey, a Cedars-Sinai neurologist, appears on the second episode and says MS misdiagnosis is “fairly common,” because “we don’t have one single test for MS,” describing the diagnosis as a list of criteria rather than a yes or no. Per the coverage, roughly one in five MS diagnoses is wrong.

The Answer That Left

The thread became an instant diagnostic convention, strangers prescribing tests at a woman whose own doctors have not named an answer, and the printable minority answered it. “imagine thinking you finally have answers only to be put right back at square one. y’all skipped the emotional whiplash of losing your diagnosis and went straight to medical debates,” one reply said, while another spoke from experience: “I too was mis diagnosed with MS, because it’s a process of elimination. One doctor said I have it, three others said nope. I hope she gets the answers she deserves.” The wit arrived via Dr. House, “Have they considered…” posted beside the famous lupus scene, and the simplest voice said the rest: “I’m so glad you’re back on your podcast. xo“

Five years of identity, advocacy, and adjustment, unwound in one sentence from a doctor, with the symptoms staying exactly where they were.

Everybody else was happy because the disease had a name. She was not, because her illness now has none.
