‘Republicans Have Officially Started Cheating’: Texas Ballot-Machine Claim Ignites Midterm Outrage

Fixing the books

A Texas voter’s claim that an electronic voting machine repeatedly changed her selection from Democrat Jon Rosenthal to Republican Bo French has exploded across Reddit, turning an already heated Texas midterm race into something much bigger: another battle over whether voters can trust the machines in front of them.

The woman, posting on X as Paige (@climatepaige), claimed she selected Rosenthal three times before her choice finally stuck, then completed her ballot and reported the incident. The allegation has not been independently verified, and the screenshot does not identify the polling location. Still, the post spread rapidly online.

My electronic ballot machine flipped my vote to a Republican candidate three times. I clicked on Jon Rosenthal, but then the machine switched it to Bo French. I had to click Jon’s name three times to successfully check out with a blue ballot.

Reported it, but WTF!

Reddit reaction was considerably less restrained. The discussion appeared under the headline “Republicans have officially started cheating,” while one commenter declared, “I am convinced this is how Texas stays red.” Another urged voters to “go slow” and make sure their printed ballot reflects their intended choices.

The timing could hardly be more combustible. Texas began in-person early voting on October 19, with voting continuing through October 30 ahead of Election Day on November 3.

The Outrage Is Bigger Than One Machine

Rosenthal and French are fighting for a seat on the Texas Railroad Commission, which, despite its name, regulates the state’s enormous oil and gas industry rather than railroads. Rosenthal is a Democratic state representative and longtime oil-field engineer. French, the Republican nominee, defeated incumbent Commissioner Jim Wright in the GOP runoff. No Democrat has won a commission seat since 1995.

That makes any suggestion of a vote being switched especially explosive. But furious social-media posts are not evidence that Republicans, French’s campaign, or election officials manipulated a machine. The Reddit thread also includes unverified anecdotes from voters reporting similar touchscreen problems elsewhere, along with demands for audits. One commenter wrote, “We need to demand audits this time.”

An important safeguard gets lost amid the outrage. Since September 1, 2026, Texas law prohibits traditional electronic voting systems without a voter-verifiable paper audit trail and bars voting systems from being capable of network connections. Texas also requires post-election hand-count audits where ballots are electronically tabulated.

That does not make a reported touchscreen malfunction irrelevant. It makes the paper record crucial.

For voters, the immediate lesson is less dramatic than the Reddit accusations, but more useful: check every selection before casting the ballot, inspect the paper record where one is produced, and alert election workers immediately if something is wrong. Because a malfunction can be investigated. Once cast, an unchecked ballot cannot be taken back.
