‘You Are Owed Nothing’: Gov. JB Pritzker Faces Pushback After Accusing Trump of Weaponizing Federal Emergency Assistance for Illinois

Money owed, or not?

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said in a post on X that President Donald Trump has weaponized federal emergency assistance and that the state will keep fighting for every federal dollar Illinoisans are owed after disasters. The post, which includes a graphic listing more than $161 million in FEMA disaster relief as “money owed” for storms in 2025 and 2026, drew dozens of replies. Online users reacted by questioning whether the amounts had been approved, citing missed filing deadlines, and raising the state’s sanctuary policies as factors in the denial.

Donald Trump has weaponized federal emergency assistance.

Illinoisans, like any other American in a red or blue state, shouldn't have to face disaster alone when it strikes.

In the post, Pritzker states that Donald Trump has weaponized federal emergency assistance and that Illinoisans should not have to face disaster alone. The accompanying graphic is labeled “FEMA Disaster Relief Owed” for Illinois and lists figures for storms in July 2025, August 2025, and August 2026, totaling more than $161.7 million.

The post follows FEMA’s October denial of a major disaster declaration for severe August 2026 storms affecting eight Illinois counties, including Cook. According to state documents reported by Capitol News Illinois, statewide damage was assessed at $27.6 million, above the $24.9 million threshold, and the state is appealing.

The state submitted the request on September 15. Neighboring Indiana received a declaration for related storms, while FEMA’s letter to Illinois said assistance was “not warranted.” FEMA also denied some previous Illinois requests in 2025.

Responses to the Illinois Governor’s FEMA Claim

Some users on X questioned the amounts and timing. One wrote, “You submitted the application after the deadline on purpose exactly so you could lie like this.”

Another said, “Not one penny of that $161.7 million has been established as an approved FEMA obligation. A request isn’t a receivable. An estimate isn’t a debt.”

A third replied, “Illinois under Pritzker has been weaponizing incompetence for years, high taxes, sanctuary handouts, and a mass exodus of taxpayers.” A fourth added, “You are owed nothing. You have blood on your hands!”

Others focused on the denial itself and the appeal. U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin stated that “Donald Trump continues to punish Americans who live in states that did not support him in the last election” and backed the state’s appeal.

Illinois Emergency Management Agency Director Ted Berger said the denial “is not the update we hoped to share with the communities that continue to recover from the devastating storms we experienced in August.”

Illinois is appealing the FEMA denial, and the dispute over whether the state qualifies for the aid remains unresolved. The exchange adds another chapter to the ongoing debate over federal disaster assistance and how requests from different states are handled.
