California Governor Gavin Newsom is celebrating a federal appeals court ruling rejecting the Trump administration’s attempt to set aside votes from approximately 20,000 people it claims are noncitizens. However, his declaration that California is defending democracy has drawn criticism from social media users who question the state’s election safeguards and accuse Democratic officials of allowing improper voting.
Newsom shared his reaction on October 26, praising the decision while accusing President Donald Trump of attempting to undermine the Constitution and the electoral process. His comments quickly sparked a heated discussion about voter eligibility, election integrity, and whether California’s voting procedures provide sufficient protections against potential misconduct.
The legal dispute began when the Justice Department sought to prevent California election officials from counting mail-in ballots associated with more than 20,000 registered voters whose citizenship status federal officers questioned. According to CNN, the administration requested emergency intervention from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, arguing that the ballots should be separated while officials determined whether the individuals were eligible to vote.
A three-judge panel rejected the emergency appeal in a 2-1 decision, explaining that the lower court had not yet been given sufficient opportunity to consider the government’s request. The ruling did not determine whether the voters were citizens or resolve the underlying lawsuit, which was scheduled for another hearing on October 27.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta welcomed the decision and challenged the reliability of the federal government’s list of suspected noncitizens. His office said a preliminary review of 200 names found that more than half had registrations that were already canceled or inactive, while nearly 39% of those with recorded birthplaces listed locations in the United States.
Newsom responded by describing the decision as encouraging news for California’s defense against what he called Trump’s attack on elections and the Constitution. The governor also accused Trump of trying to seize power illegally. He promised California would keep challenging the administration, prompting critics to shift the conversation to accusations about the state’s own election process.
Comments and Reactions to Gavin Newsom’s California Election Court Victory
Several critics challenged Newsom’s claims about protecting democracy, accusing his administration of failing to prevent ineligible individuals from participating in elections. One commenter wrote, “You allowing non citizens to vote in our elections is the real threat to democracy you POS. You turned our elections into that of a banana republic and votes are being illegally cast right now that disenfranchise US citizens votes. You are the one who’s corrupt . Trump is just trying to enforce our nations laws you give a middle finger to.“
Others faced on California’s election procedures, including ballot counting, voter identification requirements, and the handling of mail-in ballots, with another user writing, “Arrogance and self-awareness rarely go hand-in-hand.“
Some responses went a little further, accusing Democratic officials of manipulating elections without providing evidence to substantiate those accusations, with another commenter declaring, “This is why we need to monitor the cheating Democrats.”
While the court ruling marks a setback for the Trump administration, the wider debate over election integrity in California remains contentious. For voters caught in the middle, separating political accusations from the facts is easier said than done.
