After the drama surrounding With Love, Meghan on Netflix, Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, is set to co-host the rebooted Junior MasterChef. The Duchess of Sussex seems rather optimistic about her next big role, saying that she had “an incredible time with the whole team at MasterChef this past April” and “can’t wait to see what they cook up,” according to the Herald Sun. Australian politicians are less optimistic about her cooking, arguing that “Not a single cent of Victorian taxpayer money should be spent on this.”
Many people have had strong opinions about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle having excessive security in the past, especially if it’s state-paid. With Markle now having confirmed her role as Junior MasterChef co-host, many in Australia wonder their tax dollars will be spent to protect the ex-royal while she’s in the country. While it was reported by ABC that the Sussexes paid for their own security while they were visiting, local police did step in for general public safety. Critics feel state law enforcement’s shouldn’t need to be involved.
Reddit Opposes State-Funded Security for Meghan Markle
In r/SaintMeghanMarkle, hundreds of online users shared the collective opinion that Australia is being too “accommodating” for Markle and Harry. “Can Australia just take them for a while and teach them the ways of the world? Apparently Australia is one of the few countries to treat them like they deserve to be treated,” suggested a top commenter. “As an Aussie myself I am like why her. We have more talent than of her,” questioned another.
“Let the show go bankrupt,” demanded a third. “There aren’t many things that a nation’s politicians will agree on. What does it say about her that refusing to fund her security gets 100% support from politicians?” pointed out a fourth. Countless others chimed in, supporting the words of people from the Coalition in Australia, saying that an ex-royal shouldn’t have local taxpayers’ hard-earned money spent on her cooking adventures.
It has not been confirmed whether the Victoria Police were responsible for their security earlier this year, nor is there any evidence yet of Markle demanding that the state pay for her personal protection. Still, critics aren’t convinced that her security in Australia isn’t being completely paid out of her own pockets.
